Dr Ian Barr
Deputy Director
WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza

Dr Barr has over 30 years experience in R&D both in academic institutes and at CSL in vaccine development, mucosal immunology, adjuvants and cancer therapeutics. The WHO Collaborating Centre for Influenza is one of four in the world and plays an active role in regional influenza surveillance, WHO influenza vaccine formulation and testing and pandemic planning with various state and federal bodies.

Hugues Bogaerts, MD, FFPM

Hugues Bogaerts studied Medicine at the University of Ghent in Belgium. He graduated in 1981 and took up the post of Medical Director at Johnson & Johnson’s Cilag Ltd. In 1983 he was appointed Clinical Research Manager at SmithKline-RIT in Rixensart, Belgium. While in this post he became involved in the clinical development of vaccines such as against varicella, rotavirus and worked in close collaboration with the World Health Organization and other bodies.

In 1986 Dr Bogaerts joined the Upjohn Company in Brussels, where he continued to work in clinical development of Pharmaceuticals as a Research Physician for Europe, the Middle East and South Africa. He returned to SmithKline Beecham Biologicals in Rixensart as International Clinical Research Manager in 1988 and after holding several managerial posts, was appointed Director of Clinical Development with responsibility for all paediatric vaccines in 1994. In that capacity, he coordinated the development of the company’s range of DTPa based paediatric combinations, MMR and varicella vaccines. In  1996  Dr Bogaerts assumed global medical responsibility for licensed vaccines, and in 2001 he was appointed Vice President Worldwide Medical for GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals. End 2004 he assumed specific responsibility for Worldwide Medical Affairs related to prophylactic HPV vaccines for GSK, and more recently he was appointed Vice President and Senior Medical Director.

Professor Cripps is a recognised expert in the area of mucosal immunology.  He had 20 years’ experience in the Health and Pharmaceutical industries before becoming a full-time academic where he has continued research in the fields of human infectious diseases and mucosal immunity.  Whilst working in the pharmaceutical industry his main areas of responsibilities were to manage intellectual property and patenting as well as directing research towards oral immunization against a range of bacterial pathogens, particularly of the respiratory tract.

Prof Ian Frazer

Dr Frazer is a named inventor of HPV prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines licensed to CSL, Merck and GSK. He has sat on various committees of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia continuously over the last 15 years, advises the WHO on papillomavirus vaccines and was chosen as the 2006 Australian of the Year.

Nathalie Garçon completed her biological Pharmacist PhD degree in 1983 and her PhD in immunotoxicology and immunopharmacology in 1985, followed by a year in England as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Royal Free Hospital in London, undertaking research on liposomes in vaccines. She then moved to the USA where she spent four years at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, first as a postdoctoral research fellow, then as assistant professor, working on vaccine delivery systems and immunopotentiators. Nathalie joined SmithKline Beecham Biologicals – now GlaxoSmithKline – in 1990 where she set up and led the vaccine adjuvant and formulation group. She provides leadership within GSK in the field of adjuvants, from discovery to registration and commercialisation of adjuvanted vaccines. Her responsibility have moved from manager formulation research, to Vice president, head of global research and R&D in North America. She now heads the global adjuvant center for vaccine development. Her expertise in vaccinology extends from research to manufacturing, in particular covering immunology, adjuvant and formulation technologies, analytical methods, animal experimentation and toxicology evaluation and testing.

Ian is a medical virologist who serves on the Boards of the Australian International Health Institute, the International Vaccine Institute and consults for WHO the European Commission and the World Bank. During his career Ian was R&D Director at CSL, founded and directed the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research, established the National HIV reference laboratory and directed the NHMRC special unit for AIDS virology.

Assoc Prof Rajiv Khanna

Rajiv heads the Tumour Immunology Laboratory at QIMR. Over the last few years, he has successfully translated his research to the development of novel immunotherapeutic strategies for the treatment of human cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus-associated diseases. He was awarded NH&MRC R Douglas Wright Fellowship in 1997 and more recently appointed as Principal Research Fellow.

Prof. Raina MacIntyre

Professor Raina MacIntyre is Head of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at UNSW and professor of infectious diseases epidemiology. She runs a highly strategic research program spanning epidemiology, vaccinology, mathematical modelling, public health and clinical trials in infectious diseases. Her research is supported by NHMRC and ARC grants, and she has received international recognition by way of a major award, the Sir Henry Wellcome Medal and Prize, from the US military in 2007 for her work on bioterrorism. She has also won the Australian Society for Infectious Diseases Award for Advanced Research in Infectious Diseases. She is best known for research in the detailed understanding of the transmission dynamics and prevention of infectious diseases, particularly respiratory pathogens such as influenza, tuberculosis and other vaccine-preventable infections. She has a particular interest in adult vaccination with a focus on the elderly.

Sir Gustav Nossal

Gustav Nossal was born in Austria in 1931, and came to Australia in 19.39. in 1965 he was appointed Director of The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, a position he held from 1965-1996. Sir Gustav is currently a consultant for the World Health Organisation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was formerly Chairman of The Global Foundation Advisory Committee. He was Deputy Chairman of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation from 1998 to 2000. The was knighted in 1977, made a Companion in the Order of Australia in 1989 and appointed Australian of the Year 2000.

During this period, Andrew was instrumental in completing a number of landmark transactions including the public offerings for deCODE genetics Inc, LION biosciences Inc, MediGene AG; and Actelion Inc; as well as advising Tibotec Virco on its sale to J&J and advising SmithKline Beecham on the merger of equals with GlaxoWellcome. Andrew joined Deutsche Bank AG upon returning to Australia, advising on healthcare transactions including DCA Group’s acquisition by scheme of arrangement of Medical Imaging Australia, and the associated acquisition financing package. Andrew is a Director of Grannus Securities, an Australian healthcare and biotechnology advisory firm, and an adjunct lecturer at the University of Melbourne where he teaches Technology Entrepreneurship at the School of Graduate Studies.

"Sarah has been working in Clinical Research for nearly 18 years having spent the last 10 years with Quintiles as a Project Manager.  Her trial experience with Quintiles was initially in leading Patient Recruitment projects (1998-2001) for large multi-national studies across Europe and latterly in Asia Pacific (from 2001), as a Project Manager for a multi-national studies in Asia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. She is Programme Manager for a large epidemiology study running in Eastern Europe, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Significant experience working Hepatitis B, as well as experience in coronary stents, Women’s health, Type II Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure and Invasive Pneumococcal Disease.  Prior experience in patient recruitment in a wide variety of different indications and therapeutic areas, and also in surgical trials using therapeutic blood products.

Sarah currently leads the Quintiles project management team in Australia as well as having line management of Quintiles Project Managers throughout the Asia-Pac region. She has gained the Project Management Professional Certification (PMP), as set by the Project Management Institute (PMI)"
