Masterclass 1: Clean Development Mechanisms (CDMs), 14 April 2008
Registration for the masterclass will be at 08:30; the masterclass will
commence at 09:00 and conclude at 17:00. Morning and afternoon
refreshments, as well as lunch, are scheduled into the day’s proceedings.
Objective
The CDM allows industrialised countries with emission-reduction commitments to meet part of their commitments by investing in projects in developing countries that reduce greenhouse-gas
emissions while contributing to the local sustainable development needs of the host country. This masterclass will give you practical insight on how to successfully implement and manage CDM projects,
help improve on all the knowledge you have about CDM and if you are new in the field, it will give you all the expertise and knowledge to help you embark on a CDM project.

About your workshop leader

Grant LittleProject Leader

Grant is passionate about the changing climate and how African business is responding to these changes. He is a pure and applied chemistry graduate who has spent over 16 years in the forest products industry before moving on to climate change and carbon project development. He is a liaison delegate to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, worked on their local business desk during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 and was an active member of the South African ISO Technical Committee TC207 for environmental management. Part of his portfolio of duties has included SD reporting, Environmental Management System implementation, auditing, CDM project implementation, product ecolabelling through the Forest Stewardship Council and a global Greenhouse Gas strategy implementation. He holds an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science and is a part time lecturer where he brings the business perspective of sustainable development to students. He grew up on timber farms in South Africa and enjoys spending time with his family, watching rugby and being involved in his church community.

Masterclass 2: Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), 18 April 2008

Objective
In the context of climate change, never before has there been an urgency for decision-makers to consider environmental impacts before deciding whether to proceed with new projects. This masterclass will help you to evaluate your organisation’s EIA knowledge, to help increase capacity and understanding of environmental management and the environmental impact assessment process.

Ted is a leading expert in the field of Environmental Impact Assessments, having project-managed numerous large-scale EIAs to international standards (e.g. World Bank and International Finance
Corporation). Ted has also project managed and provided professional input to the State of Environment reports and Strategic Environmental Assessments produced by CES.

Dr Alan Carter

Alan has extensive training and experience in both financial accounting and environmental science disciplines with international accounting firms in South Africa and the USA. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and holds a PhD in Plant Sciences. He is also a certified ISO14001 EMS auditor with the American National Standards Institute and the British Standards Institute.

Kevin is a senior lecturer in the Rhodes Investec Business School and is responsible for the development and coordination of the environmental management electives of the Rhodes MBA
programme. He has a PhD in Environmental Biotechnology and his areas of expertise include integrated pollution and waste management, technology assessment, waste water treatment,
environmental management systems and business risk.
