I obtained my PhD in Organic chemistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne under the supervision of Professor B. T. Golding. My post-doctoral research was carried out with Dr. Michael Kahn at the University of Illinois at Chicago on beta-turn peptide mimetics, followed by research on the development of synthetic methodology in the group of Dr. W. B. Motherwell at Imperial College, London. In 1992 I joined the pharmaceutical industry as a medicinal chemist at Wyeth in the area of CNS diseases, moving to the newly formed Cancer group at AstraZeneca R&D, Boston in 2001.

Roy Baynes is Vice President, and Therapeutic Area Head for Oncology in Supportive Care, Clinical Development at Amgen Inc., Thousand Oaks, California, USA. Previous roles at Amgen have included GDL for Neulasta, GDL for Panitumumab, and TA Head for Medical Affairs Oncology. He graduated as a Medical Doctor and obtained a Master of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Dr Baynes has had a long and distinguished career in the haematology-oncology-and stem cell transplantation fields, including basic research, clinical practice, clinical research, teaching and administration. He is a member of many international societies, including the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and has authored some 150 publications. Dr Baynes has been recurrently named among America’s top physicians. Before joining Amgen in his current role in 2002, he was Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program, the Stem Cell Biology Program, the JP McCarthy Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Bank and the Hematological Malignancies Multidisciplinary Clinic at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Professor Sir Angus Dalgleish,

Angus Dalgleish was appointed to the Foundation Chair in Oncology at St. George’s Hospital Medical School in 1991.
His main interests include the optimisation of adjuvant and cell-based vaccines for solid tumours, immunostimulatory and anti-angiogenic small molecules and the pathogenesis of AIDs. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board of Progenics, Celgene and Onyvax.
He has edited five books and authored over two hundred and sixty original papers, as well as appearing in, and consulting to, programmes on HIV and cancer for Horizon, Discovery, etc.
He obtained his MB BS with an intercalated BSc and MD from the University of London. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of the U.K. and Australia, Royal College of Pathologists and The Academy of Medical Scientists.

Dr. Hanash is program head for Molecular Diagnostics at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Hanash’s interests and expertise focus on the development and application of integrated approaches to the molecular profiling of cancer, with particular emphasis on proteomics. He has been a program principal investigator for several multi-investigator aimed at biomarker discovery and validation using proteomics. Dr. Hanash has organized and participated in several workshops and initiatives related to diagnostics and proteomics. He is the inaugural president of the Human Proteome Organization which is involved in a number of scholarly activities, notably developing standards for the field of proteomics.

Dr Sridhar Rabindran is a Manager/Associate Director in the Oncology Centre for Excellence in Drug Discovery at GlaxoSmithKline, based in Collegeville, PA, where he is involved in the discovery and preclinical development of oncology drugs. Prior to this, he was in the Oncology Research division of Wyeth Research in Pearl River, NY. Dr Rabindran received his B.Sc. from St Xavier’s College of the University of Bombay, and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. He completed his post-doctoral training at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

Sir Michael Rawlins has been chairman of the National Institute of Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) since its formation in 1999. He is also chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (since 1998). He is an Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
He was the Ruth and Lionel Jacobson Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne from 1973 to 2006 . At the same time he held the position of consultant physician and consultant clinical pharmacologist to the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust. He was vice-chairman (1987-1992) and chairman (1993-1998) of the Committee on Safety of Medicines.
