Meet our speakers
Dr. Samuel T. Ariaratnam
Associate Professor
Arizona State University

Dr. Samuel T. Ariaratnam is an Associate Professor in the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering at Arizona State University.  He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo and his M.S. & Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  His educational and research interests lie in the area of trenchless construction methods with an emphasis on Horizontal Directional Drilling and Pipe Bursting. Sam has published over 150 technical papers and is active in numerous professional organizations. Currently, Dr. Ariaratnam is the Vice Chairman of the International Society for Trenchless Technology.  Additionally, he is a co-author of the Horizontal Directional Drilling Good Practices Guidelines and the Pipe Bursting Good Practices book.

Mr Jim Bentley

Jim Bentley joined Metrowater as Chief Executive in April 2006. He has extensive international experience in the water and wastewater industry, moving to New Zealand initially to take up a strategic planning role with the Auckland Region’s bulk water and wastewater service provider Watercare Services Limited. In the UK, Jim worked for 12 years with London-based Thames Water.  His range of management roles included two years managing London’s water treatment plants, four years running Middle East operations based in Istanbul and two years as the Group’s strategy director for Europe.  After leaving Thames Water in 2004, Jim worked as an independent consultant specialising in water services for developing countries and spent six months with Maxwell Stamp PLC managing projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of some of the world’s poorest people in Bangladesh.

Dr Wendy Craik

Murray Darling Basin Commission

Dr Craik took up her position as Chief Executive of the Murray-Darling Basin Commission (MDBC) in August 2004.

Prior to this Wendy was President of the National Competition Council, Chair of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and Chair of the National Rural Advisory Council. Other former positions include Chief Executive Officer of Earth Sanctuaries Ltd, a publicly listed company specialising in conservation and eco tourism, Executive Director of the National Farmers Federation, and Executive Officer of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. She has also worked as a consultant for AcilTasman Consulting.

Wendy is a member of the Board of the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and the World Fish Centre.  She has been a member of a variety of other Boards and advisory councils.

Wendy was awarded an AM in 2007 for her contribution to natural resource management and rural policy.

Dr Tim Davie
President
Hydrological Society (NZHS)  

Dr Tim Davie is the current President of the New Zealand Hydrological Society (NZHS). The NZHS was founded in 1961 with the aim of promoting hydrology as a science and its application to the understanding and management of New Zealand's water resources.  It is a wide-ranging society with over 500 members drawn from engineering consultancies, council water resource managers, hydrological technicians, scientists and academics.  Tim is also a senior scientist and Research Leader in Hydrology at Landcare Research, Lincoln. He is a graduate from the University of Otago and has a PhD from the University of Bristol (UK).  His research interests include land use hydrology, integrated catchment management and water demand management.  Prior to his current position he was an academic in the University of London (UK), lecturing in environmental science and hydrology.  He is the author of a widely used text book Fundamentals of Hydrology, about to appear in a second edition.

Prof Lewis Evans
Professor and Water Specialist

Lewis Evans is Professor of Economics at Victoria University of Wellington. He was the inaugural Executive Director of the New Zealand Institute for the Study of Competition and Regulation. He has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His specialisations are the economics of organisations and markets. He has published more than 45 refereed articles in leading international and local economics journals and has another 40 publications. He is a lay member of the New Zealand High Court for matters of commerce and a member of the former Electricity Market Surveillance Committee. He is a Distinguished Fellow of he NZ Economics Association, and 1996 he was awarded the NZIER-Qantas economics award. He consults widely in the public and business sectors.

International Water Association

David is the President of IWA and on the board of a number of international water and research bodies.  He has been participating in IWA and its predecessor organisations since 1976 when he was coopted to the Sydney organising committee for the IAWPRC Conference.

David is a scientist by training and runs a Cooperative Research Centre in Environmental Biotechnology (EBCRC) in Sydney with research links to 4 universities throughout Australia.  The CRC commissions research for its industry partners which it then provides as innovations to and for industry including using new investment vehicles. It has a budget of about $60m over 7 years.

Dick Hubbard is a respected entrepreneur and a role model among business leaders. He is renowned for the success of his breakfast cereal company, Hubbard Foods which was set up by himself and his wife, Diana in 1988.

Today the company employs around 180 people and produces more than 22 different cereals. It is the third biggest cereal company in New Zealand and has a turnover of around $38 million per annum.

Mr Raveen Jaduram

Raveen Jaduram is the Chief Executive Officer of Manukau Water Limited, a company owned by Manukau City Council.  The organisation is responsible for providing retail water and wastewater services to over 338,000 consumers.

Prior to that, Raveen held senior management roles at Metro Water Limited and Watercare Services Limited, in Auckland.  He has held various positions at the Auckland Regional Council and, prior to that, the Auckland City Council.

Raveen has honours and masters degrees in civil engineering from the University of Auckland.  He has undertaken a number of post-graduate management studies, including those from the Stanford University in California, Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Australia, and the University of Auckland.

Raveen was on the Board of the New Zealand Water and Wastes Association between 2001 and 2006, and was President and Chairman for the 2004-05 year.

He was the New Zealand Director on the House of Delegates, Water Environment Federation, and served on its Constitution and Bylaws Committee for three years to October 2006.

Raveen has worked with other technical and not-for-profit groups.  He has been on an advisory group of the Ministry of Health on drinking water quality for a number of years.  Between 1998 and 2001, he served on the management committee of the New Zealand Society on Large Dams.  Until recently, he was on the management committee of the New Zealand Water Environment Training Academy.

Raveen has special interests in engineering management and has given seminars on risk and asset management, and on public sector procurement and performance based contracting.  He has been a guest lecturer on asset management to post-graduate students at the University of Auckland for the past five years.

Raveen, a recipient of the Future Directors Award from the Ministry of Research Science and Technology in 2002, was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand in April 2004.

Dr Bryan Jenkins

Dr Jenkins is currently Chief Executive of Environment Canterbury and was appointed to that position in July 2003.  Before taking up his current position, he was for seven years Chief Executive of the Department of Environmental Protection in Western Australia, and for two years was Professor of Environmental Management at Murdoch University.

Prior to joining the Western Australian government, he was an environmental management consultant working throughout Australia, South-East Asia, India and China.  With working experience in 16 different countries, he has had to work within many different cultural contexts.

Mr Ken Matthews

Ken Matthews is the Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Water Commission.  Mr Matthews was previously the Secretary of the Department of Transport and Regional Services and the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Mr Matthews’ academic background is in economics, majoring in government (B.Ec. University of Sydney, 1974).  Mr Matthews is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration and the Australian Institute of Management.

Mr Matthews received a Centenary Medal in 2001 for services to public administration and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2005.

Hon Trevor Mallard
Minister for the Environment
NZ

Trevor Mallard is the Minister for the Environment, Minister of Labour, Minister of Broadcasting, Minister for State Owned Enterprises, and Associate Minister of Finance. He is also MP for Hutt South.

Trevor's tertiary education began at Victoria University where he completed a BCA before attending Wellington Teacher's College.  He has taught in Wellington and Taumarunui, and set up the King Country Rural Education Programme before becoming involved with politics.

His parliamentary career began in 1984 when he became the MP for Hamilton West – a position he held until 1990.

Since 1993 Trevor has been the MP for Hutt South.

When Labour came to government in 1999 he was given the roles of Minister of Education, Minister of State Services, Minister Responsible for the Education Review Office and Co-ordinating Minister Race Relations – posts he held until 2005 – as well as Minister for Sport and Recreation which he held until 2007 and Associate Minister of Finance which he still holds.

Trevor has also been Minister of Energy, Minister of Economic Development, Minister for the Rugby World Cup and Minister for the America's Cup during Labour's time in government.

Outside the Beehive Trevor Mallard is a keen road biker, and a participant in some of New Zealand's toughest mountain bike races.  He also enjoys reading and watching sport.

Euan has recently been appointed to an Expert Panel by the Ministerial Council on Energy to review regulatory arrangements associated with the ongoing reforms to energy markets

Charlie has held numerous positions in the Federation, at branch, provincial, industry and national level. Currently as well as representing the Federation as National president, he is the spokesman for trade, biosecurity, food safety, science and research, and agriculture health and safety.

Charlie was appointed to the Board of Directors of Wilson and Associates and subsequently elected chairman.  Charlie was elected Chairman for his recognized skills in strategic thinking, leadership, communications and marketing.

Kerry Prendergast is in her second term as Mayor of Wellington and about to run for a third.  She was elected Mayor after serving six years as Deputy Mayor.

She has had a long and distinguished career in local body politics having started her political life as a Tawa Borough Councillor in 1986.  In 1989 she was elected to Wellington City Council and has been successfully elected to council every three years since.

Her professional background is in the health sector as a registered nurse and, for 25 years, a midwife.  She continued her midwifery role alongside her local government work until 2001. She has also been a voluntary grief counsellor.
