Mahmood Akoob

Mr. Akoob joined Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa in 1976 and worked in various short-term insurance and claims departments. He was under more responsible for the management of the Fire Department and later for the Marine and Aviation Departments. He was appointed as General Manager in 1996, specifically responsible for Non-life operations, Finance and Strategy and Business Development.

In November 2002 he was appointed as Group Chief Financial Officer of Hannover Re Africa. His responsibilities included Corporate Finance, Investments, Information Technology and Reinsurance. He was also instrumental in establishing the first Takaful company in South Africa.

In November 2006 he was appointed as Managing Director of the newly established Hannover ReTakaful in Bahrain, bringing with him a wealth of experience in both treaty and facultative underwriting.

He currently serves on the Advisory Committee of Short Term Insurance and the Directorate of market abuse in South Africa, appointed by the Minister of Finance. He also serves as a director of the South African Reserve Bank Captive Insurance Company (SARBCIC).

 

Walid Alameddine

Alka  Banerjee

Alka Banerjee is vice president of Global Index Management and the Chairperson of the S&P/Citigroup Equity Indices and the S&P Emerging Market Indices.  Alka is responsible for the policy guidelines and methodology governing these indices.  She oversees the creation and management of Standard & Poor's global indices, focusing on creating new benchmarks for international equity markets and maintaining the integrity of index calculations.

Alka is also responsible for the S&P/Citigroup Global Property/REIT Index methodology, guidelines and maintenance procedures.  She serves on various index committees for various other S&P global indices.  She is involved in analyzing the international equity markets, and setting up procedures and guidelines for tracking the performance of stocks, analyzing companies, foreign currency changes, country specific financial regulatory laws and monitoring procedures of international stock markets.  Alka was closely involved with the transition of IFC’s Emerging Market Indices to Standard and Poor’s Index Group in 2000, and in the integration of the S&P/Citigroup Indices into the Standard and Poor’s Index family in 2004.

Prior to joining Standard & Poor's in 2000, Alka worked for The Bank of New York where she was responsible for the creation, maintenance and marketing of The Bank of New York ADR Index.  Before coming to the US, she worked for the State Bank of India for ten years in India.

Alka holds a Masters in Economics from Lucknow University in India and an MBA in finance from Pace University, New York.

Dr. Aznan Hasan is an Assistant Professor in Islamic law and the former head of Islamic law Department, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University Malaysia. He taught subjects such as Islamic Legal Theory, Islamic Commercial Law and Islamic Banking and Finance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has served as a Shariah advisor to various financial Institutions and corporate bodies. Currently he served as a member of Shariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia, the Supreme Shariah Board that oversees the practice and implementation of Islamic principles in Malaysian Islamic banking and finance. He is also a licensed Shariah Advisor for the issuance of   Islamic securities and Islamic Unit Trust Schemes, Securities Commission of Malaysia. He is also an external Shariah Fellow at Islamic Banking and Finance Institute of Malaysia (IBFIM) 

Dr. Aznan Hasan received his first Degree in Shariah from University of al-Azhar. He then successfully completed his Master degree in Shariah from Cairo University with distinction (mumtaz). Andreas Jobst

Andreas (Andy) Jobst is a mid-career economist at the Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C.

His research focuses on structured finance, risk management, sovereign debt management, financial regulation, and time series econometrics. He previously worked at the Division for Insurance and Research at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Deutsche Bundesbank, the Center for Financial Studies (CFS) in Frankfurt/Main, the European Central Bank (ECB), the Bank of England, the Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL) of the United Nations, the European Securitization Group of Deutsche Bank, and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Mr. Jobst holds a PhD in Finance from the London School of Economics (LSE). He was also educated in Oxford, Cambridge, Leicester and Maryland.

Omar Kalair

Omar Kalair obtained his bachelors degree in Business Economics and completed post-graduate studies in Business Administration at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada. Before establishing UM Financial, he worked in the finance departments at Hewlett Packard Canada and Airmiles Loyalty Group.

In launching UM Financial, Mr. Kalair succeeded in creating financing and deposit products that offer rates and features similar to conventional products yet are usury-free. At the end of 2006 – in just one and half years, UM Financial reached close to $100 million in assets that were used to finance Muslim home purchases. Today, UM Financial has eight regional offices and a staff of twenty. Mr. Kalair was recognized among CIC’s top twenty pioneer Muslim business leaders at the Canadian parliament in Ottawa. Mr. Kalair was invited to speak on Islamic Finance in at the 6th International Islamic Finance Forum in Istanbul, Turkey and the Islamic Finance Forum at McGill University.

Mr. Kalair has attended and been a guest speaker on Islamic Economics and Finance in a variety of forums and has been interviewed on the subject by some of the country's leading media outlets such as the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail and CBC Radio. The Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper, is profiling nine entrepreneurs for the year 2007 and has selected Omar Kalair as one of the nine. Additionally, Mr. Kalair has been admitted to a PhD program in Islamic Economics Finance. His thesis study will be on the implementation of usury-free financial products in the Canadian business environment. In founding UM Financial, Mr. Kalair obtained the exceptional ability to see and lead the industry from a technical, marketing, financial and regulatory angle.

 

Naveed Kahn

Naveed spent his formative years in banking with Citigroup following education at the University of Punjab, Lahore where an honours degree in Economics was followed by an MBA with Finance and Treasury specializations.  Over a 15 year period with Citigroup, Naveed moved from Karachi, where he was Citi’s Corporate Bank Head to Citibank London, Budapest, New York and finally back to London where his last role was as East European Treasurer. 

Naveed’s responsibilities included most aspects of treasury and capital markets products.  In 1999, Naveed moved to Riyadh to become Head of Islamic Banking at Citi affiliate Saudi American Bank.  The role was a wide one covering Shari’a-compliant consumer, corporate, treasury and private banking services as Division Head in SAMBA.  In mid 2004 Naveed was approached by Arab Banking Corporation to move over to Bahrain to re-shape and re-focus its wholly-owned subsidiary ABC Islamic Bank; he joined the bank in the newly created position of Managing Director in August 2004.

 

Ayman Khaleq

Dr. Lightstone is an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Pace University, Lubin School of Business, White Plains, NY, where he teaches investment analysis and advanced topics in financial management. Stephen Lange Ranzini is Chairman and President of University Bank of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He is also Chairman and President of University Islamic Financial, the first Islamic Banking Subsidiary of a bank in the U.S.

Mr. Ranzini played the leading role in the acquisition of the Bank in 1988 when he became the nation’s youngest bank holding company President at age 23, and since then has been President and CEO of the Bank’s holding company, University Bancorp (NASDAQ Symbol UNIB).  Stephen is responsible for formulating and enacting the strategic plan, annual budget and overall management of the bank.  He is the portfolio manager of the Bank’s investment portfolio, and is a registered investment advisor, managing the bank’s clients’ funds.  Stephen has successfully established numerous branch locations and broadened the company’s product range to include insurance, mortgage banking, mortgage subservicing, merchant banking, Islamic banking and foreign exchange.

Isam Salah is a senior finance partner in King & Spalding’s New York and Dubai offices and  heads up the firm’s Middle East-Islamic Finance Practice Group.

His practice covers a broad range of international and domestic finance and investment matters, with particular emphasis for the past ten years on the structuring of Shari’ah-compliant finance and investment transactions. 

His work in this area has included the first, and more than a dozen, Shari’ah-compliant financings for private equity investments, the utilization of a Rule 144a high-yield note offering to fund the Shari-ah-compliant financing of private equity investment, several billion dollars worth of Shari’ah-compliant property investments, the implementation of the first Euro-Sukuk transaction on behalf of a corporate issuer, the structuring of mezzanine and junior secured property financings (securitized and rated), and the structuring of a home mortgage product.  He is a frequent writer and speaker on the topic of Islamic finance and investment.

Arsalaan Ahmad Siddiqi is a practitioner and expert in Islamic Finance. He has has hitherto stewarded initiatives in Islamic finance, and specializes in transaction management, product development, sharia' structuring, and investment/corporate banking. Arsalaan brings with him the experience of working with conventional and Islamic Financial Institutions. He has been previously associated with Meezan Bank Pakistan, the largest Islamic Bank of the country with shareholding of Islamic Development Bank, Shamil Bank Bahrain, and Noor Financial Investment Company.
