Hedge Funds World Africa Awards 2008
Recognising and rewarding South Africa's hedge funds sector!  
The aim of the awards was to recognize the best risk-adjusted returns among South African hedge funds and funds of hedge funds based on September 2007 – August 2008 performance data submitted. Funds needed a size of minimum R50mil to qualify their entry except for fund of funds which was minimum R200mil and R100mil for fixed income categories. For the best overall hedge fund category, the winner was based on the highest absolute returns for the period. The risk free rate as at 3 September 2007 i.e. 9.76% from the Bond Exchange website in South Africa was used in the calculation of the Sharpe Ratio.
 


The inaugural Hedge Funds World Awards Africa 2008 recently held at Cape Sun, Cape Town on 11 November 2008, was attended by an impressive turnout of 300+ guests. The MC on this prestigious gala dinner was Michael Mol, a local celebrity and Top Billing presenter.

Winners for the various awards are:

Winner for best fund of funds – TriAlpha Enhanced Fixed Income Hedge Fund (sharpe ratio of 3.42)Theron Van Wyk, TriAlpha Investment Management

Winner for best long short fund – Oryx SA Fund (sharpe ratio of 0.85) Heiko Van Wyngaarden of Oryx Investment Management

Winner for best market neutral fund – Investec Asset Management Active Quants Hedge Fund (sharpe ratio of 6.52) Grant Irvine-Smith, Investec Asset Management

Winner for best fixed income fund – Validus Alternative Investment Trust (sharpe ratio of 10.17) Kevin Pretorius, KADD Capital

Winner for best new fund – Xebec Multi-strategy (sharpe ratio of 4.55) Richard Simpson & Royce Long, Obsidian Capital

Winner for best overall hedge fund – Investec Asset Management Active Quants Hedge Fund (absolute return of 28.65%) Grant Irvine-Smith, Investec Asset Management
