The World Happiness Forum is an international non-profit body that has developed from a series of ground-breaking conferences on the subject of human happiness, that began in April 2005 in Sydney, Australia.

The Happiness & Its Causes conferences were originally conceived as an opportunity to debate, compare and contrast the many different approaches to happiness put forward by science, psychology, philosophy, economics and religion. The conferences are now run in Sydney, London and San Francisco.

Can we learn to be happy?

This is the key question that has motivated the development of a series of ground-breaking conferences in Sydney, London and San Francisco and the establishment of the World Happiness Forum.

The new science of positive psychology is at the forefront of research into how we can use our own minds to create happier lives. Meanwhile, neuroscience is reporting on the connection between training the mind to be more positive and actual changes in the structure of the brain. Both of these fields hold the tantalising prospect that happiness can be enhanced by mental training.

The World Happiness Forum is an international non-profit body established to promote dialogue on the tools and techniques that can be drawn from science, psychology, philosophy, economics and religion for the enhancement of human happiness. It is motivated by a belief in the potential of the mind for growth and change and the need to look inward, as well as outward, for solutions to problems of dissatisfaction and suffering in daily life.

The World Happiness Forum organises the Happiness & Its Causes conference series, which has attracted thousands of delegates and some of the world’s top leading experts on the subject of human happiness including Nobel Peace Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Dr Jose Ramos-Horta, founder of positive psychology Dr Martin Seligman, leading neuroscientist Dr Richard J Davidson and popular authors such as Professor Daniel Gilbert, Matthieu Ricard and Tal Ben Shahar.

Purpose
To promote the creation and dissemination of learning that will enhance human happiness.

To contribute to the revolution which is taking place in the scientific understanding of the mind and the brain and to integrate the discoveries in neuroscience into other learning traditions.

Mission
The World Happiness Forum is dedicated to fostering dialogue and research between modern science, psychology, philosophy, economics and religion into the many and varied causes and conditions for human happiness. It builds on a deep commitment to the power and value of the diversity of ways of advancing knowledge and their potential to alleviate suffering and enhance happiness.

It realises its mission through:
  • Organising large-scale conferences in key international centres on topics related to happiness and its causes, and the potential of the human mind and related topics.
  • Intellectually rigorous yet accessible publications, based on WHF conferences to share the power and potential of these events with the general public.
  • Research projects focused on the adaptation of contemplative techniques that have the potential to enhance happiness.
  • Conducting contemplative retreats to integrate learning.
  • Educational programs based on our research findings that teach people proven, effective techniques to enhance human happiness and alleviate suffering.
