An extraordinary exploration of human happiness continues
This ground-breaking conference continues the fascinating examination of the tools and techniques for leading a happier life that began in 2007 at the 1st European Conference on Happiness & Its Causes.
Everyone wants to be happy

There is considerable scientific evidence to suggest that happy people are healthier, more productive, live longer and bring happiness and wellbeing to the people around them.
An exploration of human happiness
The 2nd European Conference on Happiness & Its Causes is a ground-breaking conference that is a fascinating examination of the tools and techniques for leading a happier life.
In London, October 2007, at the 1st European Conference on Happiness & Its Causes delegates were captivated and delighted by the debate amongst leaders from psychology, science, economics, medicine, philosophy and religion.
A unique event
The conference attracts a highly influential audience of professionals who are active in the care of others including those working in areas such as mental health, counselling, medicine, nursing, community youth work, psychology, social work, teaching, human resource management and professional services. For delegates it is a unique opportunity for personal and professional development.
The 2008 event will feature:
- a faculty of 30 international and local speakers.
- approximately 400 delegates.
- 2 conference days and additional pre and post conference workshops with international best-selling authors and leaders in the fields of positive psychology, cognitive therapy, medicine, philosophy, science, business and religion.
- Presentations on latest cutting-edge scientific
research into happiness.
- A vibrant conference experience with interactive
panel discussion and workshops.
Compassion as a path to happiness: the new science
At the 2007 Australian conference, the Dalai Lama and other leading minds inspired delegates with the thought that the path to genuine and lasting happiness may lie in developing positive qualities of altruism, kindness, generosity and compassion. Rather than being a self-centred search for hedonistic pleasure, the path to happiness may lie in creating a more caring and humane society.
The 2nd European Conference on Happiness & Its Causes will bring together scientists and psychologists conducting cutting-edge research into the effect of compassion and other “positive” qualities on leading a happier, more meaningful life. The program will also include case studies and personal stories from professionals in teaching, social work, business, economics and politics.
A focus on practical tools & techniques
The programme of Happiness & Its Causes has been designed to give delegates all the information that they need to assess the different approaches to happiness, apply the learning and make positive changes.
- Personal stories forums are a unique feature of Happiness & Its Causes where speakers tell their personal stories of dealing with challenges such as living with depression or other mental illness, dealing with the challenges of adolescence; finding resilience in the face of personal tragedy or life-threatening illness.
- Practical workshop sessions are another feature of Happiness & Its Causes and are important in enhancing the delegates’ learning experience. A full day pre-conference workshop and a choice of eight half day post-conference workshops provide delegates with the opportunity to delve into specialist topics such as raising children, meditation, cognitive therapy and others.
A proven international success
The World Happiness Forum organises the Happiness & Its Causes conference series, which has attracted thousands of delegates and some of the world’s top leading experts on the subject of human happiness including Nobel Peace Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Dr Jose Ramos-Horta, founder of positive psychology Dr Martin Seligman, leading neuroscientist Richard Davidson and popular authors such as Professor Daniel Gilbert, Matthieu Ricard and Tal Ben Shahar.
