Meet our speakers

Mr. Lewis Alexander,
Chief Economist,
Citigroup
Mr. Philippe Aurain,
Director of Manager Selection and Fund Monitoring,
Fonds De Reserve Pour Les Retraites (France)
Philippes main use of ETFs has been to gain exposure to emerging markets, and says the reason why they haven’t had more activity is that most ETF funds capitalization is too small for the size of investments they make, and so prevents them using them in their Strategic Asset Allocation plans. The main challenges that Philippe has observed in the ETF market is the matching of existing funds with his requirement for exposure to new asset class investments. Issues such as liquidity and higher than expected management fees have hindered his placing ETFs in strategic portfolios, though he does believe that this situation is rapidly improving as the market attracts more investors. Philippe’s responsibility within the FFR is currently as Head of External Asset Management. Previosuly he headed up in succession; head of research on savings (CDC), ALM manager (CDC), Equity portfolio manager (IXIS) and Investment Director (FRR). Philippe’s educational background is a post graduate degree in Finance, European MBA ESCP-EAP and member of the French Financial Analysts Association (SFAF).

The fund contains both equities and futures and Robert is optimizing the fund with sub-asset classes. He oversees the research of commodity asset classes and available managers within the area. His view of the commodities market is that it is in a long-term up cycle and their funds are projecting growth over the next 3 - 4 years. Robert said that they are using a limited amount of ETFs to track the gold markets. The ETFs exposure is used to take specific directional bets. Mr Frans de Wit,
Head of Commodity Investments,
PGGM
Frans works within the beta group and is responsible for all of PGGMs commodity asset allocations. The most pressing challenges he perceives for achieving beta returns in commodities investing are in choosing the right indexes for the appropriate asset class. Beta in the portfolio takes precedent over any alpha objectives and as of such Frans’ main priorities are in selecting appropriate long-term investments. He will however on occasion incorporate tactical asset allocation opportunities to achieve above market returns. Frans de Wit started working for PGGM in 2000 after he finished his studies Financial Economics at Groningen University (RuG). Within PGGM he has had several responsibilities. Mr. Christian Gattiker,
Head of Equity and Strategy Research,
Julius Baer
Christian launched in May of this year a 'substantial values strategy' that weights the stocks on their book value. This has so far proved successful with further exploration now being made to launch indexes based on fundamental weightings. Christian however doesn't believe that fundamentally weighted indexes will take over the market cap indexing sector due to the fact that long standing highly liquidated indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average will continue to act as some level of benchmark within the majority of investors portfolios, and remain the favoured option for long-term investors. However Christian does believe that for clever passive investors there is little extra gain by investing in the large traditional market cap weighted indexes and instead they should examine opportunities within fundamentally weighted indexes. After having earned a degree in economics from the University of Berne, Christian Gattiker joined the economic department of Swiss Bank Corporation (SBC) as an economic editor in 1995. He then moved to Peter Bütikofer & Cie. as an investor relations consultant for domestic and international stock-listed companies. In 2000 he joined Credit Suisse as an equity analyst, covering industrial sectors on a pan-European basis. In 2002 he was appointed to head the Swiss equity team, assuming responsibility for Swiss and European equity strategy. He received his CFA charter that same year. In 2004 Christian took over the position of Global Equity Strategist at Credit Suisse, in particular covering the U.S. equity market. In August 2006 he joined Julius Baer as Head of Equity & Strategy Research. He earned the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation in 2007.

Mr. Jason Hsu,
Director of Research & Investment Management,
Research Affiliates, FTSE RAFI Index Series
Ms. Velida Jahic,
Chief Investment Officer,
County Council of Gavleborg
Velida solely looks after the pension fund investments for the County Council of Gavleborg. Her experience in ETFs has been sporadic with limited use of broad European ETFs as well as an ETF tracking the Dow Jones Commodity Index. Velida sees ETFs liquidity, low costs, and an ability to keep exposure to hard to reach markets as favourable to other investment vehicles on the market. A challenge Velida has identified is effectively sourcing a manager who has wider experience of ETFs and believes the process of profiling her search is highly important to this exercise. She would like to know more about the simple basics of ETFs and is concerned with the impact of large amounts of investors surging into the ETFs market will haveon any ETF she is already invested in. Her panel presence is an excellent opportunity to understand the searching process of a mid sized European pension scheme and understand how solutions to common problems can be found.

Mr. Antony John,
Managing Director,
IMS Investment Managers
Antonys thoughts on ETFs: ‘I think the challenge for ETFs is to absolutely ensure correct pricing and valuation which has proved not necessarily to be the case for some issues. The challenge is that with the number of new ETFs being introduced there is an exceptionally large and growing pool to choose from across different geography sectors, right down to individual areas of the market such as specific commodities. I believe there are around 1,250 ETFs currently being traded globally so one challenge may be differentiation and I think in this respect issues regarding transparency and pricing will be critical.’ After working for National Westminster Bank for six years, in 1986, Antony established a private financial service practice. For 10 years he worked as a Director of Hill Samuel Asset Management and between 1999 and 2003 he was an Executive Director at the private Swiss bank, Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch. Mr. Murat Uenal,
Senior Consultant,
Funds@Work
Murat sees large corporate investors and pension funds moving away from segregated accounts towards a mutual fund and ETF format. There is a distinct move he says towards core-satellite approaches, core being passive with ETFs, and satellite being active in equity. The greatest opportunities for ETFs Murat believes exist in investors use of them in as strategic allocations on a long-term basis and indexes on a short. Due to the spreads on ETFs he doesn’t see them as viable for short-term investing tools but can be beneficial long. For tactical asset allocation Murat says institutional investors are becoming more sophisticated at investing themselves and are trading their own assets. ETFs are a simple way for them to attain their short-term goals he states. Murat founded Funds@Work AG at the end of 2001 where just prior he had taken over the bank marketing business at Fidelity Investments for a short period of time. Since the establishment of Funds@Work AG Murat has managed with his team more than 70 projects in 14 jurisdictions serving clients that represent the entire value chain of asset management. He worked for an international management consulting firm after his studies and joined the mutual fund/financial services business in 1998 acting finally as a Management Committee member for a German Asset Manager where he was mainly responsible for integrated marketing, sales and PR. As Head of Investment Marketing and Sales within Citibank Northern Europe (focusing on Belgium & France) in Brussels he managed the third party fund business (CitiChoice) and brokerage activities. Murat has a Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) from the Kellogg School of Management, USA in joint cooperation with WHU, Germany and its network programs at Tel Aviv University, Israel and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China. Murat also holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the School of Law at Northwestern University in Chicago.
