| Masterclass B: Building an efficient segregation system for effective city waste management
|
|
9am | Building an efficient segregation system for
effective city waste management
Objective
An effective way of reducing the cost of waste management is recycling, and successful recycling depends on segregation. Apart from financial
savings on waste disposal costs, an effective segregation system improves environmental performance, promotes health and safety, and develops new businesses. This workshop will discuss the tools and techniques to assess and measure what should be separated, identify strategies to
create partnerships with markets and suppliers, examine the best roles for the regulator in the system, and recommend tested methods for
educating the public and building public support.
Agenda
• What should we segregate and how?
• Forming partnerships, clear expectations and communication
• Building public support and educating the public
|
| | Ms Judith C. Crockett, Deputy Head of the Solid Waste and Recycling , City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development
|
9.05am | Masterclass C: Effective landfill operations strategy
Objective
Landfilling is one of the common methods for ultimate disposal of solid waste. Despite being intended for solving solid waste problems, landfill
operations in various parts of the world have also created a number of other environmental problems due to improper siting, design, construction,
operations, and post-operations practices. This workshop will introduce and discuss the effective landfill operations strategy and the important
underlying factors as well as some common problem solutions. All participants will also have an opportunities to share their experience in
both identifying various types of landfilling problems and the solution alternatives.
Agenda
• Landfilling in the context of solid waste management
• Landfill site selection
• Landfill design and operations
• Landfill closure and post-closure management
• Landfill Gas and Leachate management |
| | Mr. Dadan Wardhana H.S. , Senior Technical Advisor, Basel Convention Regional Centre for South-East Asia (BCRC-SEA)
