Masterclass A
A practical guide to measuring CDM ROIs

Led by: Al Lewis, Executive Director, Disease Management Purchasing Consortium International, and Founder of the Disease Management Association of America

How much you spend on disease management - and which conditions you target - is driven by how much you save.   Accurate savings calculations are critical for sound investment decisions.  However, if you think your disease management programs are yielding 5:1, 4:1 or even 2:1 ROIs, chances are that your calculations and reports are suffering from some classic mistakes of measurement.

This workshop is designed for the people who are investing in CDM today:
• State and Federal government health departments
• Private health insurers
• DM service providers
• Public and private health practitioners
• Employers

It will show you exactly how and why measurement mistakes are made and how to avoid them.

Course Outline

9.00 Registration and welcome coffee

9.30  Commencement of masterclass

Revealing and repairing the three classic mistakes in ROI measurement
• Why savings for certain chronic diseases are almost always overstated
• How to address the issue
• Tools to accurately measure the economic value of CDM investments
• Group exercise: identify the shortcomings of and propose appropriate solutions for a real-world case study from consulting firm William M. Mercer.

Critical outcomes report analyses
Test your knowledge with a “mock exam” and go through the results as a group to learn why over half of the reports produced deliver incorrect results, even when utilising accurate methodology, and discover how to identify these mistakes in execution.

Evaluation of course learnings
Re-analyse outcomes reports sent to Al in advance and discuss how what you’ve learned this morning changes or does not change their credibility (send the report in advance to DiseaseMgmt@aol.com)

Masterclass B
CDM in the corporate sector

Led by: Dr John Lang, MD, Good Health Solutions

Over three million Australians suffer from chronic diseases, a figure that extends to nearly ten million when including chronic back pain and migraine. When taking in to account the clinical nature of these illnesses, their impact on employee productivity is undeniable, and the problem is likely to become one of the greatest challenges for the global workforce in the coming decades.

Unlike in the US, where companies are responsible for workforce health care costs, Australian businesses bear no such burden and so have been slow to catch on to this trend. Because of the differing legislative environments, CDM in the Australian workforce needs to focus on different but complementary outcomes.  The Australian corporate sector will generally only embrace CDM if it delivers outcomes in relation to key business metrics affecting productivity such as absenteeism, presenteeism and Workcover claims.

This workshop will present the business case for investing in workforce CDM, offer cost effective solutions for employers and deliver the tools necessary to calculate ROIs.
