The Concept
Biologics are forecast to be the fastest growing sector of the pharmaceutical industry, with big pharmaceutical companies estimated to be generating around 60% of revenue through biologic products by 2010. Recent reports indicate that worldwide sales of biopharmaceutical products reached $40 billion in 2004 and are expected to reach $59 billion by 2010. However, as more and more drug companies are jumping onto the bandwagon in this potentially lucrative biopharmaceutical industry, competition is never as intense as now. This, together with the thinning drug pipelines, is driving increasingly tighter margins in biologics manufacturing.
Due to the competitive pricing pressure as well as the gain of access to the burgeoning Asian market, experienced biopharmaceutical companies are establishing manufacturing facilities in Asia, and there is also a growing trend of outsourcing biologics manufacturing to Asian CMOs. In a recent survey which involved 30 directors of biomanufacturing at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies worldwide, more than 90% of them expressed that they might consider outsourcing manufacturing to a contractor in Asia to obtain a price advantage given that quality, IP protection, and regulatory requirements are met. Therefore, the percentage of the biologics manufacturing work conducted in Asia is expected to grow rapidly in the next 10 years as Asia’s manufacturing technology, talent pool, IP protection and regulatory compliance issues continue to mature.
Against this setting, BioManufacturing Asia 2008 serves as a timely platform to allow international biopharmaceutical and biotechnology leaders to keep abreast of the latest developments in Asia’s biologics industry and to concurrently assess the current manufacturing capability and capacity of each of the individual country in the region.
BioManufacturing Asia 2008 will bring together international and regional biopharmaceutical manufacturers, start-up & spin-off biotechs, research and academic institutions, contract service and technology providers to discuss biopharmaceutical manufacturing opportunities in Asia, as well as the trends, best operational and manufacturing strategies, methodologies and technologies to improve productivity, efficiency and profitability.
