From 1997 to 2001, he was President of Baxter Healthcare Asia and his last assignment there was as Vice President, Global Renal. Al's healthcare experience covers; medical devices, hospital pharmacy products, biopharmaceuticals and homecare services. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering and a Masters in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Anja Konig, Managing Director Asia Pacific
Novartis Venture Fund, Switzerland

Anja König is the Managing Director Asia Pacific for the Novartis Venture Fund. Before that, she held the position of assistant to the Chairman and CEO of Novartis. Prior to joining Novartis she was an Associate Partner at McKinsey and Company in New York City, a global consultancy, where she worked for many years with companies in different areas in health care, including pharmaceutical drug discovery and development, biotech, and medical devices.

Dr. König has extensive experience working in the US, Europe and Emerging Markets. Anja König is a scientist by training and holds a PhD in physics from Cornell University. The Novartis Venture Fund is a VC Fund with Novartis as a single Limited Partner. It has an independent fund structure and an independent external board. The Novartis Venture Fund currently has more than USD 550 Mio under management and more than 60 portfolio companies. 

Anna Lavelle, Chief Executive Officer
AusBiotech Ltd, Australia

Dr Anna Lavelle was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of AusBiotech Ltd in June 2005.

Previously Dr Lavelle had been a Director of Intellectual Capital with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service responsible for Strategic Planning and Business Development and responsible for the management of national research and development program, evaluation of emerging technologies and international and national business development activities including technology transfer and intellectual property management.

Prior to joining ARCBS, Dr Lavelle held positions of Chief Executive Officer of a public health organisation, Industry lobbyist for a member organisation and was an academic at Monash University, Melbourne.

Dr Lavelle holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics from the University of Melbourne.

Ansbert Gadicke, Founding General Partner
MPM Capital, USA

Dr Gadicke originally trained as a physician and subsequently held post-doctoral research positions at Harvard University and MIT. To gain business experience, Dr Gadicke then spent three years as a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he worked with top management from pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and health insurance companies, in the areas of business strategy, pharmaceutical product development, marketing, company valuation and acquisitions.

In 1992, Dr Gadicke left BCG & founded MPM. For some time, MPM continued part of the work Gadicke had done at BCG, ultimately recruiting one of its clients, Dr. Michael Steinmetz, the global head of Biotechnology at Hoffmann-LaRoche, to join the firm and to help raise the first venture fund, BioVentures I, in 1997. Nobel laureate, Dr. David Baltimore, was then recruited as the chair of the medical and scientific advisory board.

Anthony Bishop, Director
Chakra Biotech Pte Ltd, Singapore

Mr. Bishop was educated in medical laboratory science in Australia at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. After graduating and working in pathology laboratories, Anthony moved to Melbourne to join an Australian pharmaceutical company, CSL. After scaling up the process for the manufacture of recombinant human growth hormone and supervising the production facility, he project managed the development of a number of new blood products including a high purity factor IX and a fibrin glue. During this period he also completed a Graduate Diploma of Management at RMIT in Melbourne. Mr. Bishop moved to Singapore in January 1998 and helped Quintiles set-up and initiate Quintiles central lab services in the Asian region. Mr. Bishop held the position of Associate Director for Quintiles in Asia. In this role he assists global pharmaceutical companies in the US, Europe and Japan to understand and benefit from the Asian clinical trial environment.
During 2006, Mr Bishop was the CEO of Chakra Biotech, a CNS drug discovery and development company. He is currently leading the development of a new antibiotic for Singapore based MerLion Pharma and also remains a Director at Chakra Biotech.

Anthony G. Viscogliosi, Principal,

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Small Bone Innovations, Inc., USA

Mr. Viscogliosi has 23 years of experience as an accomplished entrepreneur and industry leader. He made his mark as a leading Wall Street analyst and is an influential author, visionary and lecturer on health care topics. He has been a central figure in 170 orthopedic industry transactions of all types.  Notably, Mr. Viscogliosi helped to found Spine Solutions Inc., makers of the ProDisc, that was acquired by Synthes in 2003 for $350mm and, in 2004, he founded Small Bone Innovations, Inc. (SBI) where he currently serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and raised $42.2 million for SBI in 2005 – the largest VC financing in orthopedic history at that time. SBI has twice been recognized by the influential Red Herring Magazine – in 2006 - as a Top 100 Technology Companies in North America and - in 2007 - a Top 200 Global company and the only ranked orthopedic device company. SBI was also honored by the international business consulting firm, Frost & Sullivan as the 2007 Entrepreneurial Company of the Year.

Mr. Viscogliosi is a co-founder of Paradigm Spine and The Viscogliosi Spine Center at the New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases. He was CEO of Spine Solutions, Inc. at the time of its acquisition by Synthes and remains as a Vice-Chairman and Director of that entity. He was also a Director of Spine Next, SA  of France that was acquired  in 2004 by Abbott Laboratories. 
Viscogliosi Bros., LLC, (VB) a leading merchant bank and venture capital firm in the orthopedics industry that provides access to a wide variety of financial, consulting and development services. 
Mr. Viscogliosi received a B.S. degree in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1984.

Boris Bogdan, Partner

After studying medicine at the University of Basel and Barcelona, Boris has worked as a doctor in surgery. He was a doctorate in the field of hospital management and was then active in research in proteomics at the University of Zurich, Oxford and the Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle.
With studies in molecular biology, finance and pharmaceutical medicine, Boris has co-founded Avance, a Swiss company advising the life sciences industry on financial matters. His speciality is valuation in life sciences, where he has published numerous articles and the book “Valuation in Life
Sciences: A Practical Guide.”

Carrie Hillyard, Partner

Carrie is a co-founder of CM Capital Investments, where she is responsible for the Life Sciences practice. CM manages over $260M in three funds directed at life sciences and telecommunications technologies. Carrie is the inventor of a number of patents and has experience through the complete product cycle from basic research at London University, to products on the market. She has provided mentoring to entrepreneurs and assistance with the commercialisation of research to small companies and academic institutions. She has been a member of a number Australian government boards providing advice on the development of the biotechnology and venture capital industries. Prior to this he held various research and managerial positions at Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB), Taiwan including Director, Dept. of Industrial Cooperation, Director, Animal & Plant Biotechnology Program, Director, Environmental Biotechnology Program and Senior Research Fellow, Microbiology Department.

Chu Swee Yeok , Chief Executive Officer

Swee Yeok oversees the entire operations and investment activities of Bio*One Capital Pte Ltd as its Chief Executive Officer. She has more than 20 years of track record and experience in investment & technology promotion, strategic planning and business development in biomedical sciences. Prior to her current role, Swee Yeok led the Biomedical Sciences Group at Singapore Economic Development Board (SEDB) for many years and concurrently headed the Biomedical Research Council of the Agency for Science & Technology Research where she played a pioneering role in developing and implementing key strategies leading to the growth the Biomedical Sciences industry as one of the major pillars of Singapore’s economy today. At SEDB, she was also responsible for many successfully negotiations with global biomedical companies to set up their R&D, manufacturing and regional headquarters activities in Singapore.

Swee Yeok was instrumental in setting up all of the four SEDB’s funds dedicated to biomedical sciences investments, the largest being a US$600 million Biomedical Sciences Investment Fund established in 2001. She served part-time as its Executive Director in 2002, and was appointed the Chief Executive of Bio*One Capital in mid 2004, responsible for all of the funds' global investments in the biotechnology and medical devices & technology. Today, Bio*One is the leading biomedical investment management company in Asia, managing a portfolio of some 60 biomedical companies worldwide.

Damien Lim, General Partner

Damien Lim is General Partner of BioVeda Capital, which is focused on life science investments. Douglas Schein has operated for over 10 years in the design, development and launch of innovative medical technologies. As Director of Engineering of a successful medical device start-up and a product development consultant, he has contributed across all stages of the life science commercialization process.  Douglas’ current focus is technology transfer and private equity investments in the life sciences. He formed BOOST Venture Creation to provide the financial and human capital necessary to grow Asian medical technology start-ups during their critical early years and transform them into sustainable, valuable companies.
 
Prior to establishing BOOST, Douglas was the Director of Engineering for Organ Recovery Systems (ORS), a medical device company, where he managed the product portfolio and the development and launch of ORS’s first product offering, a preservation system for human organs for transplant. While at ORS, Douglas helped to launch the ORS European office in Belgium and worked throughout Europe introducing new products, establishing strategic alliances and licensing technology. Elliot Parks, Managing Director
Hamilton BioVentures, USA

D. Elliot Parks, Ph.D., is Managing Director with Hamilton BioVentures. With over 30 years in the life science industry, including private, corporate, and international venture capital, he has extensive experience successfully translating biomedical science into commercial products.  Prior to joining Hamilton, he led Ventana Capital Management’s life science venture practice.  Dr. Parks has worked closely with international investors from Asia, Europe, North, and South American.  A well-known figure in the biotechnology community, Dr. Parks has served in key leadership positions in academic research at the Scripps Research Institute, in product commercialization at Johnson & Johnson, and as a biotechnology company CEO, prior to entering venture capital.  He currently serves on the board of several companies and institutions including, BIOCOM, the Scripps Health Foundation, Transcept Pharmaceuticals, and is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Whittier Institute for Diabetes.  Dr. Parks earned his Doctorate in cellular and molecular biology at the University of Washington, Seattle, and trained under the Surgeon General of the Army.

Fred M. Schwarzer, Managing Partner

Fred has extensive operational and fundraising experience, including the development of corporate partnerships and the structuring of venture capital investments and acquisitions. Prior to founding CLS, Fred was the chief executive officer and then chairman of Heska (HSKA). During his tenure at Heska, Fred completed corporate partnerships with Bayer and Novartis, completed seven acquisitions and Heska’s initial public offering and follow-on public offering. During this time, Heska also obtained its first FDA approval, launched its first products, created its sales and marketing effort and grew its revenue to approximately $40 million. Fred has also been the president and chief executive officer of Mingly Capital Corporation, which was focused on developing cross-border opportunities in life sciences and information technology. He was also executive director of the Mingly Corporation Limited (listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange) and prior to that he was a senior vice president of C.M. Capital, a diversified asset management company. Fred began his professional career as an attorney representing technology companies and venture capitalists. In 1985, he was made a partner with Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury, Winthrop) and in 1988 he founded the firm of General Counsel Associates (now GCA Law Partners). Fred holds a JD from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law and a BA from the University of Michigan.

Freddy Y. C. Boey, Professor & Chair , School of Materials Science and Engineering

Freddy Boey graduated from  Monash University, Australia as top graduate with 1st class hons. B. Materials Eng. 1980, worked as failure analyst before obtaining his Ph D (Chemistry/Engineering) in 1987 from NUS. He is  presently Professor of Materials Science & Engineering and Chair, School of Materials Science & Engineering. He is also Chairman of Nanofrontier Pte Ltd, Amaranth Pte Ltd,  and sits as board director in  Amaranth Medical Inc (USA),  Analytical NanoTech and ROAR, both UK companies listed in UK, Patriot plc (India), Electroactiv Inc  and Adcomp Pte Ltd (Singapore).   He is also  Deputy President, Materials Research Society, Singapore and is currently Chairman for  ASTAR’s Review Panel for Public Sector Funding .   He  is an invited panel member  for the National Science  & Technology Award and  the MedTech Proof of Concept Funding Pane. 

He has started up 3 companies in the Biomedical Device arena. He has patents licensed to Biomedical companies in USA/Singapore, and is technical consultant to several Biomedical & Advanced Materials companies. He has previously graduated more than  20  Ph Ds and  presently supervises another 12. His current collaborators include Northwestern University, Caltech Bioengineering Dept , Mayo Medical Center at  Rochester,  CEA Saclay, UCLA’s California Nanosystem Inst.    He has  won  > $9m research grants last 6  years and published >  180  journal papers.

Georgie H. F. Lee, Director, Equity Sales
UOB Kay Hian Pte Ltd, Singapore

Mr Lee is currently a Director, Equity Sales, with UOB Kay Hian Pte. Ltd.  He is actively involved in IPOs, reverse takeovers, mergers and acquisitions, and private equity fund raising. He has played a major role in  many of the IPOs on the Singapore Exchange over the past years.

Mr Lee has been involved in the stockbroking and financial services industry  for more than 30 years. He is one of the founders of the DBS Group's  stockbroking business, DBS Securities, in 1986 and was instrumental in building up the company's equities business in its initial years. He subsequently left to help establish the stockbroking business of the PrimePartners Group. Mr Lee also served as CEO of one of Malaysia's largest stockbroking groups, TA Securities Bhd, in Kuala Lumpur. Upon returning to Singapore, he joined Singapore Technologies (ST) Capital as  their Executive Vice President. and subsequently moved on to become Senior  Director of Millennium Securities, a member of the Hong Leong Group.

Gregory A. Bonfiglio, Managing Partner 
Proteus Venture Partners, USA

Mr. Bonfiglio is the Founder & Managing Partner of Proteus Venture Partners - a new fund focused solely on regenerative medicine.   He is in the process of raising the investment capital for that Fund.   Proteus will invest in the leading private companies in cell therapies, tissue engineering, and aesthetic medicine.   Proteus also will invest in companies making the devices that will enable regenerative medicine therapies, as well as companies using stem cells as in vitro tools for drug discovery and development. Mr. Bonfiglio was an early investor in the field of stems cell & regenerative medicine companies.  From 2000 – 2005, Mr. Bonfiglio was a General Partner with Anthem Venture Partners – an early stage venture fund in California.   Anthem funded Advanced Cell Technology (ACTC.OB) in 2000, and Mr. Bonfiglio led the team that took the Company public in early 2005.   In addition, Mr. Bonfiglio is on the Board of VistaGen Therapeutics, one of the leading companies using hESLs as in vitro tools.   Mr. Bonfiglio continues to be an active participant in the field of Regenerative Medicines.   He is a frequent speaker at Regenerative Medicine Conferences.  He is a Member of the ISSCR and is on their Industry Committee.  He also is a Member of the ISCT and is on their Commercialization Committee.        

Mr. Bonfiglio has over 25 years experience working with technology companies.    While at Anthem, Mr. Bonfiglio led investments in both biotechnology and IT deals.  He was responsible for managing Anthem’s investments in Advanced Cell Technology, and Corus Pharma, as well as several IT companies.  Anthem has generated top 5% returns for its investors. 
Prior to joining Anthem, he was a Partner with Morrison & Foerster, where he worked extensively with technology clients.   He represented both emerging and mature companies, in matters pertaining to intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, employment, and corporate restructurings.   Mr. Bonfiglio was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, from 1996 to 2000.   Since 1995, he has been a regular Guest Lecturer at the UC Berkley Haas Business School, in the Top Down Law program.     

Gordon Binder, Managing Director
Coastview Capital, USAFounder & former CEO, Amgen Inc, USA

Gordon Binder, founder and former CEO of California-based Amgen, is among biotech’s most respected business minds, owing to his shepherding of Amgen to the world’s largest biotech today. Under his leadership, the breakthrough recombinant human erythropoietin (Epogen), treatment for anemia in kidney disease patients, became the biotech industry’s blockbuster product with sales surpassing $2 billion in 2001.

Mr Binder has been chairman of both BIO and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), and he is currently on the boards of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology and the American Enterprise Institute. In 2000, Mr Binder retired from Amgen but his clear biotech vision combined with his sharp financial mind led him to another new chapter in his career as he founded Coastview Capital, a venture capital firm that invests in biotech companies, where is he is currently Managing Director. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the biotech business, he won the 2005 Global Leadership Award by Biotechnology Roundtable.

Guy Heathers, Former Chief Executive Officer
Amaranth Medical Pte Ltd, Singapore

Guy obtained his PhD in cardiovascular research from the University of Bath, UK and completed post-doctoral research at Washington University Medical School, St. Louis, USA. Guy moved into the commercial sector by joining Hoffmann-La Roche as a Senior Scientist in the cardiovascular drug discovery department in New Jersey, USA. After almost seven years and progression through drug discovery departments of Metabolic Diseases, Bronchopulmonary Research, and Inflammation & Autoimmune Diseases, Guy moved into the business development arena with a move to Cancer Research Campaign Technology Ltd in London in 1995.
In 2001, CRV joined forces with the National Cancer Centre of Singapore and Temasek Holdings Ltd of Singapore to form Biotech Research Ventures Pte Ltd (BRV) in order to bring biotechnology business development expertise and services to Singapore and the Asian region. In July 2001, Guy transferred from CRV to become BRV’s Chief Executive Officer where he was instrumental in the establishment and development of three more companies, Agenica Research Pte Ltd, Systome Therapeutics Pte Ltd and pSiOncology Pte Ltd.

After a three-year stint at BRV, Guy moved to head Australian-based Gateway Capital Ltd, a biotechnology business development and investment company, as Chief Executive Officer. Guy then returned to Singapore to work with Asia BioBusiness, a consultancy group of biotech business development specialists and eventually with two major projects. One of which Guy was the ‘Acting CEO’ for a new Medtech company in Singapore, Amaranth Medical Pte Ltd. developing bioresorbable stents for use in peripheral vascular disease, and the other as Australasian Business Development representative for Cancer Research Technology Ltd. In his role as Acting CEO for Amaranth, Guy was instrumental in closing a Series A investment round of almost USD 10 million from Singapore’s Bio One investment company and a leading Silicon Valley Venture Capital firm, Charter Life Sciences.

He Guosen, Senior Investment Manager
Shenzhen Capital Group Co., Ltd, China

Guosen joined the largest China VC, Shenzhen Capital Group Co., Ltd. (SCGC) in 2006. He is responsible for life science and chemical industry project investment. His portfolio companies include Hubei Dinglong Chem, the only charge control agent (for toner) producer in China; HYBIO, the largest Chinese polypeptide medicine producer; YPSun, the only image-guide-radiation-therapy developer; Beike Biotech, the pioneer on R&D and application of adult stem cell technology in the world and, he is going to close three investments soon, on 2rd generation HPV vaccine, HIV vaccine and one company engaging in “Microwave Synthesis” of biomaterials Polylactide (PLA) and Polycaprolactone (PCL) in China. He is the chief of Life Science Division at SCGC.

He obtained bachelor degree in Chemistry from Lanzhou University and Master of Medicine from Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2000, he obtained Ph.D. from National University of Singapore and afterwards, he did research at National Cancer Centre of Singapore, Freiburg University and Nanyang Technological University. Supported by his 14 years research on anti-tumor drug discovery, cancer gene therapy, enzyme modeling, biomaterials and medical device etc, and his strong business acumen, he finds there are plenty of innovations in China, and in less than 2 years he becomes a leading investor on life science.

SCGC has invested over 160 companies. It sends investee companies to 11 global leading SE for IPO and so far, has completed 36 IPOs.

Hui Hsing Ma, Venture Partner - Life Sciences
TVM Capital, Germany

Ms Ma has been an advisor to TVM Capital since late 2004 and joined TVM Capital as Venture Partner for life sciences in 2007. She entered the life sciences industry in 2000 when she was a Senior Vice President at Vertex Management, where she co-led the Global Biotechnology Investment Division. Since 2003, she has been advising life sciences businesses wishing to expand or raise funds in Asia. Prior to 2000, she accumulated over 16 years of international investment, corporate finance and general management experience with Singapore Technologies, Banque Nationale de Paris, General Electric (USA), Morgan Grenfell, Booz, Allen & Hamilton and Price Waterhouse.

Ms Ma holds a MSc in Biotechnology from the Johns Hopkins University, USA, a MBA from Manchester Business School, UK and a Bachelor of Accountancy from the National University of Singapore.

Ichiro Kawada, President

Ichiro Kawada is the Director of JAIC Asia Holdings Pte Ltd & President of JAIC Asia Capital Pte Ltd, the wholly owned Singapore based Japan Asia Investment Co., Ltd. (JAIC). He is currently a Director of PT JAIC Indonesia as well. Mr. Kawada has more than 16 years of experience in venture capital and private equity. Jean-Yves Nothias, Managing Director,  Biotechnology Venture Capital

Jean-Yves Nothias is the Managing Partner of the Biotechnology Venture Capital Team at SG Asset Management Alternative Investments (“SGAM AI”). Since joining SGAM in 2000, Nothias has built a team of professionals managing a global portfolio of 36 biotechnology companies. Previously, he was a sell-side analyst for Hambrecht & Quist based in Paris and a corporate banking analyst for Oddo & Cie. Dr Nothias is on the supervisory board of two French companies, Cytomics and Biosystems and two US companies, GenomeQuest and Scynexis. Dr. Nothias holds a thesis in Molecular Biology from Université Pierre & Marie Curie and a master's in management from Université Paris Sorbonne. As a scientist, he worked at several research institutions in France and in the United States. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, N.J., from 1993 until 1995.

Lawrence Chin, Director of Investments

Lorraine Hahn, Journalist & TV presenter, Former TV Talk show host & Anchor

Ms. Hahn is based in Hong Kong having spent her journalist career focused on Asian business issues. Her reputation developed over 20 years as a prominent journalist, presenter and talk-show host, most recently with CNN. Ms Hahn is an experienced moderator, interviewing business leaders, heads of state and other personalities. She was named "highly commended news presenter/anchor" at the Asian TV Awards in December 1999.

Ms. Hahn was host of CNN International's regional chat show, Talk Asia until November 2006. She previously anchored CNN’s long-running Asia TV programme, CNN's Biz Asia (1998 -2000). Ms Hahn also spent 3 years at CNBC hosting its flagship program, Business Tonight, as well as The Winners, Talk of Asia and NBC Asia Evening News. She also covered the historic Hong Kong 1997 handover.
Before CNBC, she was a senior producer and anchor in Hong Kong for Television Broadcasts Ltd. (TVB).  Ms. Hahn entered television broadcasting as a senior reporter and anchor for TVB's general and financial news units in 1988 before moving on to the English-language, daily program, The Financial Report. Her career in broadcasting began with Hong Kong's Commercial Broadcasting Corporation. She has lectured at Hong Kong University and gives talks on journalism and media. Ms Hahn also holds a degree in Business and English Literature from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. She was born in Singapore & subsequently emigrated to Canada.

Murali K. Prahalad, Vice President, Molecular Biology Essentials

Dr. Prahalad currently holds the title of Vice President, Molecular Biology Essentials at Invitrogen Corporation (Nasdaq: IVGN), a global leader in reagents and tools for life science and biomedical research.  In this role, he is responsible for the general management of Invitrogen’s Transfection and Selection, Nucleic Acid Separations, Cloning and Competent Cells, Custom Primers and Bioinformatics businesses.  Dr. Prahalad joined Invitrogen in April of 2005 as a Director in the Corporate Development Group where his primary responsibilities focused on mergers and acquisitions.  Prior to assuming his current role in July of 2007, Dr. Prahalad coordinated all of Invitrogen's in-licensing activities for nearly two years.

Prior to joining Invitrogen, Dr. Prahalad was the Vice President of Business Development for Sequenom Inc., a San Diego, CA-based biotechnology company.  His professional experience also spans management consulting and information technology.  He was a consultant with The Advisory Board Company in Washington, D.C. and later was a Co-Founder of zGraffiti, Inc., a McLean, Virginia based software firm specializing in CRM solutions for online retailers.  Dr. Prahalad completed his B.Sc. with Honors from the University of Michigan in1992. He went on to complete his Masters in Medical Sciences and Doctorate in Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology from Harvard University in 1995 and 1998, respectively.

Philippe Kourilsky, Chair of Molecular Immunology

An eminent scientist and expert in molecular immunology and tumor immunity, Professor Kourilsky had a rapid scientific career both in the academic and corporate setting. He is the Chair of Molecular Immunology at the College de France and was formerly Director General of the prestigious Pasteur Institute.

Professor Kourilsky was also a co-founder of Transgene, a gene therapy company based in France and was the President of Research of Pasteur Merieux Connaught (today Sanofi Pasteur) from 1993 to 1996. A winner of several scientific awards, he has published over 300 publications, including two reports for the French government and two scientific reference books. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences and l'Academia Europea. 

Por-Hsiung  Lai, Managing Director

Por Lai is the Founder of Dephoron Group which explores investment opportunities in Asian life science and healthcare industries. Prior to assuming the position of Managing Director at Dephoron in February 2007, Lai managed the Taiwan-based life science investment company, President Life Sciences Co., Ltd. which he co-founded in 2000 with the Uni-President Group, and served as its President and later Vice Chairman till early 2007.

Before returning to Taiwan, Lai had spent almost 20 years in the US biotech industry. He founded the cytokine company, Protein Institute, Inc. in Pennsylvania in 1990, and served as a manager at Sequemat, Amgen and Centocor from 1981 to 1990. Lai co-developed rhEPO and rhG-CSF and other biopharmaceuticals at Amgen and monoclonal antibody drugs at Centocor. Between 1992 and 1997, Lai co-founded the Kirin Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. with Kirin Brewery of Japan and developed its biopharmaceutical markets in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. 

Lai graduated from Kao Hsiung Medical College of Taiwan with a pharmacy degree and from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy with an MS and a Ph.D. degree in medicinal chemistry, and was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Iowa during 1977-1981. Lai has published more than 40 scientific papers, patented key biotech patents, and has been an adjunct faculty member with University of Kentucky and Kao Hsiung Medical University. He has served as an advisor to the Taiwan government on developing biotech industry, and served on the boards of directors of a number of companies and organizations, including Accuray, Aurora MRI, Androscience, A-Spine, Trident Medical, Taiwan Bio, Development Center for Biotechnology of Taiwan. 

Ralf Altmeyer, President
CombinatoRx Singapore Pte Ltd, Singapore

Ralf Altmeyer studied biochemistry and microbiology at the University of Tuebingen in Germany and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA and obtained his Ph.D. in 1994 from the University of Paris. He joined the Institut Pasteur in Paris in 1991 where his team worked on novel vaccines and diagnostic tools against virus infections like SARS-CoV, Avian Influenza and HIV/AIDS. In 2003 Ralf Altmeyer was appointed CEO of the HKU-Pasteur Research Centre, a joint venture of Institut Pasteur and the University of Hong Kong. In 2006 Ralf moved to Singapore where he took up the position of President of CombinatoRx-Singapore Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of CombinatoRx, Incorporated (CRXX). Sanjay Sehgal, Managing Partner & CEO

Sanjay Sehgal is a founder and Managing Partner & CEO of East West Capital Partners, a healthcare-focused private equity firm based out of Singapore and Bangalore. Prior to EWCP, Sanjay was a Partner and member of the investment committee at Symphony Capital Partners (Asia) (f.k.a Schroder Capital Partners), a private equity firm, which managed in excess of US$860 million in institutional money aimed at development capital and buy-outs throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Sanjay joined Schroder Capital Partners in 1994 in Hong Kong and then moved to Singapore in 1997 to help establish the group's presence there. While at Schroder Capital, Sanjay represented the Funds' interests on the board and committees of several portfolio companies, both listed and unlisted, throughout the region and focused on investments in the healthcare sector. Prior to joining SCP in 1994, Sanjay was a Manager in the Boston office of LEK Consulting, an international strategy consulting firm focusing on management strategy and mergers & acquisitions. He has also worked as a researcher at GTE Laboratories in Waltham, Massachusetts (now Verizon Corporation). Sanjay has served as the elected Hon. Treasurer and Hon. Secretary of the Singapore Venture Capital and Private Equity Association.

Sarath Naru, Managing Director

Mr. Naru has been the Managing Partner of Ventureast since November 1994. In this role he leads the fund management teams of 4 funds: The APIDC Venture Fund, The Biotechnology Venture Fund, The Unified Domestic Fund and The Ventureast-TENET fund. He combines his current position of being a venture capitalist with the experience from the other side of the table as well. Specifically, he has also been an entrepreneur and a business builder.

Mr. Naru took over the management of Ventureast in the first such privatization of a financial institution in India. Since he took over, he has turned around the fund by attracting investors, making early stage investments and adding significant value to these companies. Continuing on this focus of early-stage business, he also manages an IT and Telecommunication focused fund (Ventureast-TENET Fund) in collaboration with the TENET group of IIT Madras and Ray Stata, Chairman of Analog Devices, USA. The unique aspect of this fund is its focus on technologies addressing the ‘digital divide’ when other funds have been shying away from investing in early-stage businesses.

Prior to this, Mr. Naru built a trading and manufacturing business in USA and India. He gained significant experience working for Procter & Gamble in the area of brand management/marketing in USA and UK. He has had manufacturing experience with VST Industries in Hyderabad. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Technology from IIT, Madras and MBA (Finance) from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Naru has served as Secretary of the Indian Venture Capital Association, a co-sponsor of the local chapter of ‘TiE’ (a prominent angel and mentor forum that originated in Silicon Valley), and was the Andhra Pradesh state-level Committee Member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), one of the most prominent business fora in India

Stephen Knight, Managing Partner

Dr. Knight has worked in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries for over sixteen years.  Prior to joining Fidelity in 2003, Dr. Knight was president and chief operating officer for EPIX Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For six years before joining EPIX, Dr. Knight worked at Arthur D. Little Inc., primarily as a senior consultant in Cambridge and Brussels, Belgium specializing in mergers and acquisitions in the pharmaceutical industry.  Prior to 1990, Dr. Knight performed research at AT&T Bell Laboratories (now Lucent Technologies), the National Institutes of Health, and at Yale University. Dr. Knight holds an M.D. from the Yale University School of Medicine and an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Organization and Management.  Dr. Knight received a B.S. in biology from Columbia University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. Knight currently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors for Veritas Medicine and EnVivo Pharmaceuticals.  He also serves on the Board of Directors of Microbia, U.S. Genomics, CardioKine, Mersana, and FoldRx Pharmaceuticals.

Suzette Dutch, Managing Partner
Triathlon Medical Ventures, USA

Suzette is currently a Managing Partner of Triathlon Medical Ventures which she co-founded in 2003 after 16 years of venture investing within a corporate structure. Suzette was a Managing Director of Senmed Medical Ventures and served as a member of the investment committee from its creation in 1987 until 2003. She led the strategic planning, market and industry research, clinical/regulatory and business analysis due diligence efforts for start-up through later stage investments. She represented Senmed on the board of several companies, including I-Flow, Transplant Therapeutics and Optosonics and currently represents Triathlon on the board of Renal Solutions, Inc., Akebia, and BioVex.

Prior to venture investing Suzette spent 9 years in large and small companies in pharmaceuticals, devices, and diagnostics. In medical devices Suzette led strategic marketing and business development for Sencorp Inc.'s surgical stapling business until its sale to Ethicon. She began her life science industry career at SmithKline's Pharmaceutical Division in various positions in market research supporting clinical studies designs, and regulatory and reimbursement planning.  Subsequently she was responsible for integrating SmithKline's acquisitions of Allergan, Beckman, and the Clinical Laboratories businesses in her position in corporate planning.

Suzette holds a BA degree in Economics, Cum Laude from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA in Finance and Decision Science from Wharton Graduate School, University of Pennsylvania. Suzette also serves on the Boards of the Greater Cincinnati Venture Association and of BioStart Foundation and as an advisor to the Kentucky Life Science and Technology Corporation and a Cleveland based incubator, JumpStart.

Tan Sze Wee, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director

Dr Tan was appointed to the Board on 29 October 2003. He is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the Company and the Rockeby Group. Dr Tan joined Rockeby on 1st July 2001. Prior to joining Rockeby, Dr Tan was the Asia-Pacific Associate Regional Medical Director for Mead Johnson Nutritionals, a division of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company from 1997 to 2001.

Dr Tan is currently the official spokesperson and council member of the Singapore Medical Association (“SMA”). He is currently the Chairman of the Singapore Medical Association Private Limited, the commercial entity of SMA. Dr Tan has represented SMA on several Ministry of Health Committees such as the Singapore Medical Council Continuing Medical Education Co-ordinating Committee. and the Maintenance of Competence Committee. Dr Tan is a member of the EDB Singapore MedTech Concept Advisory Panel supported by EDB’s biomedical Sciences Group. He is the Vice-Chairman of the Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore’s Executive Committee. Dr Tan is also a Board of Governor of the IP Academy of Singapore, and a council member of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Yeoh Keat Chuan, Executive Director,  Biomedical Sciences Group
Economic Development Board, Singapore

Mr Yeoh Keat Chuan was appointed Executive Director of the EDB’s Biomedical Sciences Division on 1 February 2007.  The Singapore Economic Development Board’s Biomedical Sciences Division is responsible for the planning, development and promotion of the biomedical sciences industry cluster in Singapore.  It includes the Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology, Medical Technology and Healthcare Services sectors, which collectively accounted for over S$23 billion in manufacturing output and 5% of Singapore’s GDP in 2006. 

Keat Chuan is a Glaxo-EDB scholar who graduated with a Master of Engineering (Chemical Engineering), from the Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine, University of London.

Upon graduation, Keat Chuan was assigned to the Industry Development Division (Chemicals) as a Senior Officer in 1994.  He was appointed Assistant Head (Chemicals) in 1997 and was assigned as Centre Director (Washington DC) in the same year.  In 2000, he assumed the appointment of Regional Director, Eastern US, based in New York.  In that job, he was responsible for the EDB’s Eastern US operations including the 3 offices in New York, Boston and Washington DC. 

Upon completion of his overseas assignment in 2003, Keat Chuan attended Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and graduated as a Sloan Fellow in July 2004 prior to returning to Singapore where he assumed the position of Deputy Director, Biomedical Sciences.

Yi Shi, Managing Director
Lilly Asian Ventures, China

Dr. Yi Shi joined Lilly Asian Ventures in 2007 as a Managing Director based in Shanghai, China.  Prior to the current assignment, he worked in various roles with increasing responsibility over six years at Eli Lilly and Company.  His experience includes leading the development of a comprehensive investment strategy for China as well as negotiating multiple biotechnology and pre-clinical deals world-wide.  Dr. Shi was also instrumental in the founding of InnoCentive, Inc., a Lilly Ventures portfolio company, where he managed scientific operations as well as its expansion into China.

Before joining Lilly, Dr. Shi was the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of NetBig.com, an internet start-up, where he successfully grew the company to become the number one education and technology portal in China.    He began his career as a management consultant with Ernst & Young in the Life Science Practice Group and specialized in sales and marketing strategy.   Dr. Shi received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and a Master of Business Administration degree, both from Duke University.  He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Science and Technology of China

Zhi Yang, Managing Partner

Dr Zhi Yang is the Founder and Managing Partner of Bioveda China, the first international fund focusing on LifeScience in China.  The fund has attracted institution investors such as: International Finance Corporation, HBM BioVenture, Temasek Holding and Investor AB.  In one year, the fund has built a portfolio with 6 very promising companies.  One of them has listed in LSE in July.
