A TALE OF TWO KINGS
SPOT LIGHTING AVIATION HEADLINERS WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

King of the Indian Skies: Shri Praful Patel

“India's aviation industry is likely to grow at the rate of 25 per cent for the next 10 years, presenting a huge opportunity for foreign and private players”
Praful Patel, Civil Aviation Minister, Government of India

Civil Aviation Minister and business reformer, Shri Praful Patel manages the civil aviation ministry with the same acute business sense he uses to steer his CeeJay Group into sustainable financial growth.  Shri Praful Patel owns one of India’s biggest bidi and tobacco-derivatives businesses and was referred to as Vidarbha’s Bidi King.  He is also king of the Indian skies for now.

Within months of taking charge as Union Civil Aviation Minister in 2004, Shri Praful Patel negotiated a deal with the Left to hike the FDI cap in the domestic airlines sector from 40% to 49%.   Also to Shri Praful Patel’s credit is the successful privatisation of the two busiest airports in India – the Delhi and Mumbai airports. Last but not least, he personally championed for the acquisition of new aircraft for Indian and Air-India.  Shri Praful Patel also piloted the successful merger between the two government carriers to create a huge airline that can match international rivals airlines in terms of fleet size.

In a recent Economic Times article featuring an interview with Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, he talked about the key developments taking place on the domestic front and on the challenges and possibilities for future growth.  The ministry has declared 2008 as the year of helicopter and sea planes and how India can truly emerge as the cargo, among other aviation developments.
All remains to be seen on how Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel will steer the ministry to reach these significant milestones within India’s dynamic aviation sector.

King of good times: Dr Vijay Mallya

Kingfisher-Air Deccan Group is now India’s largest domestic airline connecting 69 cities and offering over 570 flights daily with a fleet of 78 aircraft. With effect from Aug 2008, Kingfisher will be entitled to launch international operations, upon the five year launch anniversary of merged partner Deccan Aviation. Kingfisher will launch daily non-stop services from Bangalore to San Francisco and Newark, followed by services to Toronto and Los Angeles from Bangalore. It will also connect Delhi and Mumbai to the US and UK

Kingfisher Airlines announced plans in Feb 2008 to offer a standing bar in Economy Class on its long-haul international routes. Executive Vice President from Kingfisher, Hitesh Patel, stated, “we have always maintained that we are in the hospitality business and not just the airline business… As we will be offering non-stop flights on international routes, the standing bar will allow the economy class passengers to walk around, stretch and have few drinks”. .

Hear Dr. Vijay Mallya, Chairman and CEO of Kingfisher, speak at our India Aviation Outlook 2008 confernce that is taking place on 10-11 June 2008 in Mumbai. Gain first hand knowledge on the latest developments pertaining to Kingfisher-and-Deccan merger and integration – what does this mean to your business?
