James McSkimming is a senior research analyst within Russell Investment Group’s investment policy and research group, in Sydney. He has responsibility for researching and recommending investment managers in Australian equities and Australian small companies managers. James joined Russell in 2004.
Prior to this, from 1996 to 2004, James was with Glebe Asset Management, most recently as general manager of equities, as well as director and chief investment officer. His responsibilities included managing the equity team, as well as investment strategy development for a range of institutional and public offer trusts investing in Australian and global equities, fixed interest, specialist Asian ex-Japan equities, diversified property and balanced portfolios. James was a founding member of the team that created the firm which grew to be recognized as one of Australia’s leading socially responsible investment managers. Their equities team was awarded Ethical Fund Manager of the Year 2003, for its small-cap fund, which returned over 42% in the year ending 31 December 2003.

Jon Addison is the Fund Manager of the Meat Industry Employees Superannuation Fund (MIESF). Jon joined MIESF in June of 1999 and is responsible for the overall management and investment strategy of the Fund.
Jon also sits on the Board of a number of companies, particularly in the fund’s management and private equity sector
Jon has over 30 years in the investment management industry, including wide experience in superannuation.
Prior to his appointment to MIESF, Jon was a Director and Asset Consultant within the Corporate Finance section of PricewaterhouseCoopers and in this role was responsible for establishing an investment consulting practice with clients ranging from superannuation funds to insurance funds and funds managers. Prior to that, Jon was Manager, Investment Consultant at Sedgwick Noble Lowndes.

Dr Akbar Ali

Dr Akbar Z. Ali (Aku) completed his PhD at The University of Adelaide. His thesis was in the field of Behavioural Finance and Market Inefficiencies during the Technology Bubble in the USA. Prior to this, Dr. Ali completed MCom (Finance) from University of New South Wales (1997), MBA (Marketing) from University of Karachi (1992) and BS (Computer Sciences) from University of Karachi (1988).
Akbar has been a finance lecturer at University of Technology Sydney, Monash University and is currently at The University of Adelaide. He is the BCom and BFin Honours Coordinator and Finance (Undergraduate) Coordinator. In addition, Akbar is also a visiting lecturer at The University of Indonesia and The University of Management and Technology, Pakistan.
Akbar has several papers published in academic journals, and has participated in various local and international conferences. In 2006, Akbar was the conference chair for the Second Australasian Business and Behavioural Sciences Association Conference. In addition he has worked with the financial planning industry on several consulting projects. His current research interests include financial planning and advice, financial institutions and customer relationships, market efficiency, socially responsible investments and contagions in financial markets.
Before his academic career, Akbar was a software engineer and Account Manager for AT&T GIS/NCR.

Don has fifteen years investment management experience most recently as Head of Active Equities, Asia Pacific and a member of the global Senior Management Group at State Street Global Advisors.
Whilst at State Street Don was responsible for leading a team of portfolio managers running long and long/short active and enhanced Australian equity portfolios and successfully launching the first 130/30 long short strategy within State Street. As Chief Investment Officer at Westpac Investment Management he was instrumentally involved in the mergers of BT and Rothschild with Westpac's financial services division to form the new BT Financial Group. He held a number of other senior investment roles with BT and was also a member of their Investment Committee.
He started his career with Arthur Andersen before becoming a Lecturer in Finance at University of Queensland and subsequently a senior analyst and member of the Investment Committee at Queensland Investment Corporation.

Stuart Birkett

Stuart is a foundation member of the Australian Implemented Equities team having been at QIC since February 1999. He has 14 years industry experience including over 9 years in multi-manager investing with QIC. He spent 4 years in an analyst role with the QIC International Equities portfolio prior to commencing in the Australian team. Before joining QIC, Stuart worked at National Mutual in various roles.
Stuart has proven ability in manager selection and portfolio construction including understanding the dimensions of risk and return, the impact of cashflows, derivatives, futures trading, and transition management
Stuart’s experience includes developing the manager selection process and scorecard approach, along with the manager monitoring, reporting and risk management processes for the Implemented Equities group. Stuart has a Bachelor of Business (majoring in accounting and banking and finance) and a Masters of Applied Finance and Investment.

Rudi Minbatiwala,

Rudi is the Senior Portfolio Manager (Structured Equities) in the Colonial First State Global Asset Management Core Australian Equities team. In this role, Rudi has responsibility for the management of the Alpha Plus (130/30) Fund and Enhanced Yield Fund, including the analysis of structured equities such as equity derivative strategies and hybrid securities. In addition to this, Rudi is involved in the fundamental analysis of small companies within the Core Australian Equities team.
Rudi has been part of the Core Australian Equities team since January 2000. During that time, his prior roles within the team have included Portfolio Manager for the index Australian equities portfolios, Senior Quantitative Analyst for the Core active portfolios and Equity Analyst covering the diversified financials sector.
Rudi has completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Actuarial Studies) and a Bachelor of Applied Finance from Macquarie University. Rudi has also been awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Aaron’s previous role was head of Australian Fixed Interest at Macquarie Funds Management managing more than $5bn of fixed income investments. Aaron has over 13 years experience including tactical asset allocation, strategic benchmark setting, and portfolio management.

Damien Hatfield is a founding partner of Hatfield Liptak Advisors, a specialist Australian hedge fund advisory and marketing company. Previously, Damien was Executive Director of Pengana Hedge Funds an ASX Listed Company. Pengana incubated and seeded six Australian based hedge funds including the Pengana Absolute Return Real Estate Fund and Wallace Australia Opportunities Fund. Damien raised over US$200 million for the funds in an eighteen-month period. Prior to Pengana, Damien was Head of Hedge Funds for Colonial First State. Prior to CFS Damien assisted Basis Capital in their initial setup. Damien started an alternative business at Deutsche Bank (Sydney) in 1992. Damien also worked for Deutsche in Hong Kong until 1999. Damien was the founding Chairman of AIMA Australian Chapter and was the first recipient of the Australian Hedge Fund Industry Contribution Award in 2005.

Daniel Liptak is a founding partner of Hatfield Liptak Advisors, building on extensive financial industry experience including 15 years work in in the hedge fund environment. He established LCA Group Pty Lt, a hedge fund intelligence business in 2004. This business focused on the Australian industry and Australia based products providing league tables and news to offshore and domestic investors. Daniel and his business partner sold LCA Group to ICAP Australia (a subsidiary of ICAP plc) in 2006.
Prior to LCA Group Daniel was head of Research and Portfolio Manager for Rubicon Asset Management Ltd. Previously he was Head of Alternative Research at ASSIRT (now Standard & Poor’s).
Daniel was an Associate Director of Sales and Prime Brokerage at UBS Warburg and worked in risk management at the Goldman Sachs Prime Brokerage desk in London.
His strengths lie in combining quantitative and qualitative assessments, creating a sophisticated iterative model for that purpose. He has a special interest in new financial markets and innovative funds management strategies.
Daniel has contributed to various research studies by Australian government bodies including the Reserve Bank of Australia and to various international magazines.
