Mr Michael Barr,

Michael advises on various aspects of mutual funds law and regulation and on the establishment, authorisation and listing of funds in Ireland. He advises on the setting-up of various types of UCITS and non-UCITS Irish regulated funds and in respect of the establishment of Cayman funds. He also works with fund service providers in connection with custody, administration, prime brokerage and other service agreements. Michael has significant experience in general corporate and IT law which are of much benefit to our funds industry clients. Michael has assisted a number of companies involved in foreign direct investment into Ireland as regards their setting-up here and relationships with Irish Government grant agencies. He recently advised Sector & Alcentra on the establishment of their respective hedge funds structured products ranges in Ireland.

STEPHEN BIRCH joined Hymans Robertson in March 2003 having spent six years working in management consulting. He is Head of Hymans Robertson’s Manager Research Team. In addition to overall responsibility for manager selection and analysis, Stephen focuses on fixed income managers. Stephen graduated from Durham University in 1996 with a degree in Economics.

Srikant Dash is Head of Global Research & Design at Standard & Poor's Index Services. He leads the global team responsible for research and design for all S&P indices. He has led the development of more than three dozen asset class, thematic and strategy indices underlying assets of more than $50 billion. Among the indices he has created are S&P Equal Weight Index, S&P Style and Pure Style indices, S&P Private Equity Index, S&P Thematic Index Series, S&P BRIC 40 Index, S&P STARS Index series and S&P Preferred Stock Index. He has been a member of the U.S. index committee since 2002 and has authored several research papers on index issues. Srikant joined Standard & Poor's in 2000 as manager of global index analysis. In this role, he provided analytical support to Standard & Poor's global indexes. His research included core-satellite and cash equitization strategies, and frameworks for benchmark comparison. Srikant holds a Bachelor's of Electrical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad. He is a Fellow of the Global Association of Risk Professionals and a CFA charter holder. Srikant is a frequent contributor and reviewer for industry journals and publications and is widely cited in the press.

Expect some controversy as Rick is of the opinion that 130/30 funds actually hinder manager performance and what is more he says there is evidence to support his claim!

Charles Krusen has more than 30 years of experience in financial markets. He is a Partner of Alpha Equity Management, a US-based asset management firm that is a pioneer in 130/30 strategies with three actively managed funds with audited 6 year track records. In addition, he is the Chief Investment Officer of Krusen Family Partnership, a Tampa-based family office. Krusen was previously Executive Director in the Derivatives Product Group of Fimat USA (a subsidiary of Société Générale), and he participated in the initial institutional investing in financial futures and options with Citigroup Capital Markets. He serves on the Board of Directors of Delta Rangers Inc, a financial services firm that was an early developer of the US real estate derivatives marketplace. Krusen is an honors graduate of Harvard College.

James Martielli is the Senior Portfolio Manager of SEI’s U.S. Equity team. SEI is a manager of managers with over US$189 billion in assets under management. James leads the team that is responsible for manager selection and portfolio construction for all of SEI’s U.S. equity products. James led SEI’s research efforts on 120/20 and 130/30 strategies beginning in 2003. He authored a research paper in January 2005 which quantified the expected benefit from relaxing the long-only constraint. He led SEI’s efforts to launch the first manager-of-managers U.S. mutual fund to employ 120/20 strategies in December 2005. SEI now utilizes 5 sub-advisors managing approximately US$1 billion in 130/30 strategies across three separate US Large Cap and US Small/Mid cap mutual fund vehicles. SEI is currently in the process of expanding 130/30 strategies into its UCITS-based products.

Grellan works in the funds authorisation area of the Financial Regulator, primarily specialising in regulatory policy on derivatives, risk management and structured products. Grellan, an Irish chartered accountant, spent over 13 years working in London where he worked for both Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse First Boston. On returning to Dublin in 2003, Grellan worked with a currency hedge fund manager in the IFSC before joining the Financial Regulator in 2005. He qualified as an accountant with Ernst & Young in Dublin after obtaining his degree from Trinity College Dublin and a post-graduate accounting diploma from University College Dublin.

Gary Palmer is the Chief Executive of the Irish Funds Industry Association, the representative Association for the investment funds industry in Ireland. Gary is also a director and board member of the US based National Investment Company Service Association (NICSA) and of the European Funds and Asset Management Industry Association (EFAMA) where he is also a member of the management committee. He is a member of An Taoiseach’s (the Prime Minister’s) Clearing House Group and is chairman of the Investment Funds Committee. Gary is also a member of the IFSRA’s, the Financial Regulator’s Consultative Industry Panel where he also chairs the EU and International advisory group. Gary is a member of the Department of an Taoiseach’s Asset Management Task Force as well as being a member of the Department of Finance’s IFSC Tax Working Group and the board of the National College of Ireland’s International Financial Services Institute. A graduate of University College Dublin, prior to his current position Gary was the Director of Development with The Institute of Bankers in Ireland.

Leonie Ryan is a Senior Vice President of Lehman Brothers and works in the Product Management team of Capital Markets Prime Services. Leonie joined Lehman Brothers in 2006 to help set up the newly formed Capital Markets Prime Services Product Management Team. She is responsible for the Equity Long Short, UCITS III & 130/30 products in Europe. Prior to Lehman, Leonie spent 8 years at Goldman Sachs, playing an instrumental role in setting up 3 new businesses. She joined the graduate training program at Natwest Markets in 1995, as a Project Manager in Equities . Leonie holds a B.A. (Hons) in Economics & Finance from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.

Dr Christopher Sier is an industry authority on the operational management of derivatives by the buy-side. He has advised a wide range of market participants including investment managers, service providers, brokers and IT vendors, on strategic and operational issues relating to derivatives. Chris has recently been appointed as a Director of Alpha Financial Markets Consulting, the well-known buy-side strategy and benchmarking consultancy.

Maggie is extensively involved in quantitative research in asset allocation, security selection and portfolio construction for QMA. Maggie joined QMA’s predecessor in 1987. She has published articles on finance and economics in numerous publications, including, The Financial Analysts Journal, The Journal of Portfolio Management, The Journal of Investment Management and Award Papers in Public Utility Economics. Maggie earned a BA cum laude with distinction in Economics from Boston University, and holds an AM and PhD in Economics from Brown University.
