Dr Josie Close,
Hon. Research Asst Professor,
Centre of Renewable Energy, University of Hong Kong

Josie Close is an architect by training who has worked in London, HK and SE Asia for more than 25 years. Her work in the region’s developing countries alerted her to the importance of ‘passive design’ principles, the relevance of alternative energy technologies and the increasing impact of building services on buildings’ operational performance. Her research at the University of Hong Kong covered daylight, ‘smart glass’ and photovoltaics or PV (the generation of electricity from sunlight). PV subsequently became her research focus and monitored built applications highlighted that building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is “affordable” within (HK) government construction budgets.

Dr Close and her multi-disciplinary team has also contributed to the local acceptance of grid-connection, the broader understanding of distributed electricity generation, the linkage of building energy management with intermittent renewables in squeezing dependency on fossil fuels and the potential for solar thermal, and waste water recycling - amongst others - in HK’s dense city context and its urban regeneration. Though not a trained engineer, Dr Close is an invited member of the Energy Institute and recently was awarded the MBE for her contribution to the research and application of renewable energy in HK.
