The Concept

High metal prices have brought about major changes in the metal making, processing and scrap recycling industries. We have seen the rapid rise of the mini-mills riding high on the wave of scrap metal recycling. We have also seen the emergence of the new metal masters, especially the Chinese and the Indians whose competitive business models are striking deep into the established metal markets of the USA, Japan, Eastern and Western Europe.

Scrap metal prices are traditionally volatile following closely the value of the primary metal markets. However due to strong manufacturing and construction growth in Asia and beyond, in recent years, scrap metal has continued to demand premium prices. As such, it is increasingly seen as a national resource deserving of international trading restrictions. The scrap industry has been encouraged to source new products from non traditional markets still open to international traders.

The increasing value of the scrap market has lead to the creation of a new breed of scrap processor using new technology and modern management strategies to edge out their competitors. The industry is reorganizing to take better advantage of scrap collection, processing and transportation efficiencies. New opportunities for profit are available to those prepared to innovate and who develop strategies to extract value from previously undervalued sources of scrap.

E-Scrap comprising base and precious metals, represents a new and valuable business opportunity for scrap processors. Take Back legislation originating in the US and rapidly spreading around the world, forces manufacturers of obsolete consumer products to be responsible for their safe and environmentally sound recycling. This is applicable to electronic products such as computers and mobile phone, but also car hulks. This change in attitude on the part of industry and the regulators, represents a rich new seam of profit for innovative scrap metal recyclers.
