Mr Shane Hellwege,
Supply Coordinator, BMA Coal,
BHP-Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance

Shane has over 10 years in experience in the mining and construction area, and his enthusiasm for RFID and the benefits he sees it will provide to the industry have driven his evangelistic approach to applying RFID at BHP Billiton’s BMA Coal, Norwich Park Mine. In his current position as Supply Coordinator for the world’s largest resources company, Shane was involved in the deployment of a Wireless-based Barcode solution on site. He set a challenge for the organisation to enhance open store operations on site by using RFID to enhance the effective management of their inventory.
Shane has always looked at ways to embrace new technologies on site to support warehouse operations in the sometimes extremely hectic and rugged environment of a Coal Mine Operation. To “close” or man the warehouse operation would significantly inhibit effective operations, therefore, systems needed to be adopted to improve transparency of inventory transactions.
Shane and the Team at BHP used existing processes in place within BHP to run and deploy a large and complex RFID project incorporating an EPC Class 1 Gen 2 RFID infrastructure – the results were outstanding and something that any company wanting to deploy RFID may wish to consider in their recipe for success!
