Tom Baruch founded CMEA Ventures to pursue a lifelong fascination with how investment discipline and
strategy can nurture investment success in the application of exponential new technologies, such as
Moore's Law and genomics, to building breakthrough companies that will transform markets.
Tom honed his early-stage investment skills beginning at the Battelle Development Corporation in the
late 1960's and then at Exxon Corporation in the 1970's and early '80's. At Exxon, he managed
investments and created several early-stage technology companies applying materials science and
semiconductor-industry technologies such as Supertex (SUPX).

Tom formed CMEA Ventures with New Enterprise Associates (NEA) in 1989 after previously having
founded and served as CEO of Microwave Technology, Inc., a supplier of GaAs integrated circuits and
value-added sub-systems. Tom was one of the original investors in Aclara Biosciences (which merged
with Monogram Biosciences - NASDAQ: MRGM), Flextronics (FLEX), Netro (NTRO), Silicon Spice (acquired
by BRCM), and Symyx Technologies (SMMX). He currently serves on the boards of Alien Technology,
Entropic Communications, Foveon, NewPath Ventures, Raven Biosciences, RF Magic and Symwave.
Tom currently heads up the firm's energy & materials investments to include fuel cells, solar power
generation and management, biofuels, and rechargeable batteries, among others. He continues to
engage in his passion for early-stage investments by serving as Chairman of the Board of materials and
energy companies including: Codexis, Inc., Intermolecular, Superprotonic and Wildcat Discovery

Mr. Carr is a partner in Morrison & Foerster’s San Francisco office. He represents public agencies, landowners, private individuals, non-profits, and business concerns in all areas of natural resource law, including forestry, agriculture, mining, endangered species, water quality, coastal and ocean, fisheries, land use and real property law. Michèle Corash is a partner in the firm’s environmental law practice group. She served as General Counsel of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 1979 to 1982 and previously as Deputy General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Energy and special assistant to the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.
Ms. Corash represents companies on a broad range of state, national, and international environmental issues and claims regarding exposure to toxic substances. She works regularly with government agencies and legislatures in the development and implementation of environmental laws and programs. She has defended clients in numerous enforcement and private actions brought under state and federal environmental and toxics laws, and has also brought and defended cost recovery actions. She defended one of California’s largest environmental criminal actions. She helped draft the original superfund statute in 1980, and many of the federal regulations under the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and Resources Conservation and Recovery Acts.
Another significant component of her practice has been actions brought under state consumer and competition protection statutes, including false advertising and false claims statutes. Ms. Corash is considered one of the nation’s leading experts on Proposition 65 and has defended hundreds of cases under that law, including Dowhal v. SmithKline that resulted is a unanimous California Supreme Court decision for her client.
Ms. Corash is again recommended by the 2006 Chambers USA and is selected annually for listing in Best Lawyers in America as a leader in the field of environmental law. She is named as the country’s #1 environmental lawyer on the “Top Ten Lawyers for Environmental Law,” US Lawyer Rankings 2007 . California Lawyer Magazine cited her as one of the “Best of the West” lawyers because of landmark wins in two environmental court decisions. She is listed among Northern California’s top 50 female Super Lawyers, as well as top 100 overall. For the last five years she has been named to the Top California Women Litigators List by the Daily Journal . Philip J. Deutch is Managing Partner of NGP Energy Technology Partners (“NGP ETP”). Joyce M. Ferris, Founder and Managing Partner, has over 20 years of experience in the GreenTech sector as an entrepreneur and an investor. Ms. Ferris has a unique set of skills combining demonstrated leadership with hands-on transaction and management experience in the energy industry. She has had principal roles as an investor, technology and equipment provider, a financial advisor and as a project developer. Ms. Ferris was a major shareholder, board member and Director of Business Development for EPI until she sold her interest in 1998. In January 1999 Ms. Ferris co-founded Blue Hill as the US subsidiary of a London based firm, Impax Capital. In January 2000 Ms Ferris led the purchase of the US subsidiary and changed the name to Blue Hill Partners. Ms. Ferris has held numerous board positions and is currently on the board of Princeton Energy Systems and Encelium Technologies. She has been a speaker at industry conferences in the US and Europe. Winston Fu is a general partner at USVP. Michael Gallagher has been Chief Operating Officer of Westport since January 6, 2003, and in October 2004 was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer. He is responsible for Westport’s technology development, demonstration and commercialization operations worldwide. Prior to joining Westport, Dr. Gallagher was Senior Vice-President, Americas, for Fluor Corp, a $10 billion global engineering and project management company headquartered in California. He also held senior executive officer positions with the Bechtel Group in San Francisco and London-based Kvaerner Group. John L. Geesman was originally appointed to the California Energy Commission on July 18, 2002, to fill an un-expired term. He was reappointed to a full five-year term by Governor Gray Davis on December 31, 2002, and was confirmed by the Senate. By law, four of the five members of the Energy Commission are required to have professional training in specific areas - engineering or physics, environmental protection, economics, and law. One commissioner is appointed to represent the public-at-large. Commissioner Geesman fills the Attorney position.
Commissioner Geesman serves as Presiding Member of the Renewables Committee and the Facility Siting Committee.
Commissioner Geesman, of Orinda, California, rejoined the Commission after originally serving as its Executive Director from 1979 to 1983. From 1983 to 2002, he was an investment banker specializing in the debt markets. During this time, he served as Chairman of California Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the California Power Exchange, and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Independent System Operator.

Previously, Samir worked at the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) with Craig Venter. At TIGR, Samir led the Arabidopsis thaliana sequencing project, the first plant genome to be completely sequenced, and was an invited lecturer and keynote speaker at a number of

Jonathan Lash is president of the World Resources Institute (WRI), a global environmental think tank that goes beyond research to provide practical solutions to problems of environment and development. During the past ten years under his leadership, WRI has pioneered the use of digital technologies to solve environmental problems, engaged the business community in helping to foster development that is sustainable, and created new mechanisms to empower civil society groups.
From 1993 until 1999, Mr. Lash served as co chair of the President's Council on Sustainable Development, a group of U.S. government, business, labor, civil rights, and environmental leaders that developed visionary recommendations for strategies to promote sustainable development.
Mr. Lash is a member of the board of the Institute for Sustainable Communities, the Avina Foundation, and the Heinz Center, and of the advisory board of Generation Investment Management.
He has served on a broad range of national and international groups, including: the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Round Table on Sustainable Development; the Tata Energy and Resources Institute (India); the Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation (Japan); the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development; and the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (Japan).
Before joining WRI, Mr. Lash directed the environmental law and policy program of the Vermont Law School. From 1987 to 1990, he headed the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, having served the previous two years as Vermont's Commissioner of Environmental Conservation. During his tenure in Vermont government, Mr. Lash helped write a score of innovative statutes on issues ranging from pollution prevention and solid waste management to protection of pristine streams. In 1990 he became director of the Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School.
A former Peace Corps volunteer and a former federal prosecutor, Mr. Lash also worked as a senior staff attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) from 1978 to 1985, litigating on issues related to public lands, federal coal leasing, strip mining, and energy conservation, and authoring two books.

Mr. Martenson is a Division Director with the Macquarie Group and President of Macquarie Funds Management (USA) Inc. based in the United States. He also works closely with GE Energy Financial Services' investment professionals to evaluate specific investment opportunities and to create and develop new ones.
Prior to joining GE, Steve was with Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), where he was engaged in research and strategic consulting on energy technology and electric power for a wide range of clients worldwide. His responsibilities at CERA included coverage of the technology, economics, policies, markets, and industry dynamics of all forms of renewable power, as well as distributed generation (such as fuel cells and cogeneration), gasification, nuclear energy, and other power generating technologies. At CERA, Steve worked on policy issues including electric transmission, distribution, energy metering, wholesale market design, power market modeling, long-range scenario planning, and corporate strategy development.
Prior to CERA, Mr. Taub was with the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., where he served as a career employee in the office of the Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management and the Office of New Production Reactors.
Steve earned master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Technology and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. Meir Ukeles, General Partner, 34, brings extensive financial, market and strategic analysis, public and private equity deal execution and technology understanding to the ICV Fund. Meir began his career in 1996, working together with Glen Schwaber at Jerusalem Global Ltd., an Israeli merchant bank that was a leading source of private equity funding for Israeli tech companies during the 1990s. At Jerusalem Global, Ukeles led the angel financing of QXL Ltd., an investment which generated the highest IRR in the firm’s history. He also led the initiation and structuring of a joint venture between Jerusalem Global and CDC, Taiwan’s largest investment bank, which led CDC to become a major LP in the Jerusalem Global Ventures VC fund. Tim Walsh, Silicon Valley Bank – Senior Relationship Manger. Tim has sixteen years of experience in financial services and has been with Silicon Valley Bank since 1997. At SVB, Tim is responsible for developing new relationships and structuring debt facilities for Technology and Clean Technology companies. Prior to SVB, Tim was a business development officer and managed a $200MM portfolio of asset-based credit facilities for NBD Bank in Detroit Michigan. Tim has a BA from Indiana University.

Marianne Wu leverages her broad business and technology background to identify new investments and work with portfolio companies at MDV. She focuses on energy and materials investments.

Prior to joining MDV, Marianne was vice president of marketing at ONI Systems where she was responsible for product strategy and market development. Earlier in her career, Marianne was a consultant at McKinsey and Company where she advised major technology clients on strategic and operational issues. Marianne has conducted state-of-the-art research in MEMS and optical devices at Stanford University and started her career as a design engineer at Nortel Networks where she developed high-speed networking technologies.

Industry Affiliations: Member of Hua Yuan Science and Technology Association (HYSTA) VC Group; Environmental Entrepreneurs and the China-US Energy Efficiency Alliance.

Education: Marianne earned both her doctoral and master's degrees from the School of Engineering at Stanford University and her bachelor's in Applied Science at the University of British Columbia.
