Richard joined Drake following a career spent servicing the needs of Japan’s leading financial institutions as an attorney and consultant. From the mid- 1980’s, his legal practice focused primarily on the tax, legal and business structuring of offshore investments, and was responsible for creation of the first investment limited partnerships funded with Japanese public pension money (the historic “Nenpuku” funds) and the first unit trusts organized by Japanese insurers. He added a consulting arm, known as “HedgeJapan,” to this practice in 1996, in response to calls from Japanese institutions for more in- depth access to hedge funds and training in hedge fund investing skills. HedgeJapan became a catalyst for the Japanese alternative industry, from 1997 to 2004 operating the first and only regular monthly seminar dedicated to exposing Japanese institutions and hedge fund managers to each other, and in 2002 launching www.hedgejapan.com, the first Japanese- language website dedicated to the needs of Japanese institutional hedge fund investors.

Actively involved with Asia for many years, Richard speaks Japanese and Mandarin. He lived for 11 years in Japan, which he knows as few other foreigners do, having designed one of the first Japanese word processors (for which he earned his PhD and a patent). Writing in Japanese, he contributes regularly to the Japanese media and is the author of The Intelligent Investor’s Guide to Offshore and Hedge Fund Investing, published by Diamond in 1999.
