About Hong Kong

Hong Kong is situated on the southeastern coast of China and spreads out over 1,100 square kilometres (425 square miles). It is known as Asia’s world city, as well as the travellers’ gateway to China and to the rest of Asia. Being compact, visitors are never too far from shopping and major sights. Hong Kong also has an excellent transportation system so visitors can easily reach other areas, no matter where they stay.     Population  About 6.8 million people reside in Hong Kong, with almost 95 per cent of the population being Chinese.     Climate Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with distinct season. Typhoon season is May to November. The temperature and humidity rises in March, with temperatures ranging from 18 degree Celsius to 27 degree Celsius. Evenings can be cool, so a lightweight jacket should suffice.      Language The official languages are Chinese and English, with Cantonese the most widely spoken Chinese dialect. Use of Putonghua is growing. All major signage is in English or is bilingual. Visitors will find that most people in the service industries speak English.   Hong Kong is geographically compact and boasts one of the world's most efficient, safe, affordable and frequent public transport systems.
