Concept
As patent expiries take their toll on small molecule blockbuster drugs, big pharma are turning to biologic therapies to drive future growth. If you break down big pharma revenues over next 6 years or so, 60% of it is going to come from biologic products including a big percentage coming from monoclonal antibody products. Thus, big pharma and biotech need to develop and manufacture biological products on a large scale as quickly as possible.
The Chinese government continues to cut the price of drugs and the authorities are considering introducing price caps for all prescription drugs in the near future, which would have a negative impact on pharmaceutical revenues across the board. On the positive side, however, in a milestone ruling, the state legislature recently upheld a patent for Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, overturning a previous decision by patent office SIPO. While the volume of fake drugs continues to be problematic, foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Chinese pharmaceutical sector will grow, following gradual legal and pricing regime improvements.
Accompanied with China’s economy take-off, the biopharmaceutical market is also growing at an unprecedented rate! Leading pharma and biotech MNCs have been actively penetrating this market and setting up its operations in China. Chinese government is also improving its policies to attract foreign investment and technologies into the biopharma sector. The exisitng local pharma and biotech companies and new companies setting up by returning Chinese entrepreneurs from USA and Europe are also actively investing in this sector and upgrading their manufacturing plants to meet the booming demand.
The China biopharma market is never as HOT as of now!
However, with its distinct business environment, prevailing regulatory and cultural barriers, China remains a challenging market for global biopharma companies. To plan effectively for entry into China, international biopharmaceutical companies need to understand the current opportunities in China’s biopharmaceutical market and determine the most successful methods for entering that market. Alliances and partnerships will be a key strategy in gaining access to the required network needed to successfully penetrate this market.
