Mr Jon Addison,
Fund Manager,
Meat Industry Employees' Superannuation Fund


Jon Addison is the Fund Manager of the Meat Industry Employees Superannuation Fund (MIESF). Jon joined MIESF in June of 1999 and is responsible for the overall management and investment strategy of the Fund.

Jon also sits on the Board of a number of companies, particularly in the fund’s management and private equity sector
Jon has over 30 years in the investment management industry, including wide experience in superannuation.

Prior to his appointment to MIESF, Jon was a Director and Asset Consultant within the Corporate Finance section of PricewaterhouseCoopers and in this role was responsible for establishing an investment consulting practice with clients ranging from superannuation funds to insurance funds and funds managers. Prior to that, Jon was Manager, Investment Consultant at Sedgwick Noble Lowndes.


Mr Ken Atchison,

Ken established Atchison Consultants in 2001 to provide advice regarding financial and investment assets to major funds, focusing on property portfolios including appraised-based and listed Australian and global property. Ken was previously a consultant with the global firm Towers Perrin, advising funds on improving investment performance by ensuring effective investment policies and management structures.

Before joining Towers Perrin, Ken had been an investment consultant for four years for another firm as the manager of the business. He has also been General Manager and Chief Investment Officer for Wardley Investment Management.

Ken’s consulting clients have included major Australian financial institutions and funds.


Mr Syd Bone,

Prior to joining VFMC, Mr Bone spent six years as Managing Director of the Asia-Pacific operations of Baring Asset Management, a member of the ING Group. Prior to that role, Mr Bone was a Principal at Towers Perrin where he worked for seventeen years, starting in Melbourne, then Hong Kong as Managing Director of Asia, and finally New York at Towers Perrin's International Consulting Office. His roles at Towers Perrin included both actuarial and asset consulting. Mr Bone holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Honours from the University of Melbourne, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

Dr Angelo Calvello,

Dr. Calvello is Executive Vice President, Institutional Relationship Management, for Man Investments Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of the Man Investments division. He will focus on developing Man’s US institutional business. Previously, he spent over six years with State Street Global Advisors where he helped build the firm’s portable alpha and hedge fund businesses. Dr. Calvello joined Man in 2006 and has worked in the financial services industry since 1983.

Dr. Calvello earned a Ph.D. in Contemporary European Philosophy from DePaul University and a post-doctoral certificate in business from New York University's Stern School of Business. Dr. Calvello writes and speaks extensively about hedge funds, portable alpha, and alpha/beta separation. His most recent publications include "Succeeding in an Alpha-Centric World," "Funds of Hedge Funds and Portable Alpha," and "Deconstructing Portable Alpha." Angelo recently chaired major portable alpha conferences in Sydney, Hong Kong, New York, and Copenhagen. His pod casts on portable alpha are available on iTunes and other web sites. His writings also have appeared in Healthcare Financial Management, Barron's, Investment News, NAPFA Newsletter, American Indian Culture and Research Journal, and Derivatives Strategies. Angelo is a trustee for a police pension fund in Illinois and is also a member of the Chicago Quantitative Alliance.

David Chessell is Director of Access Economics. David leads Access Economics’ investment advisory team, which provides a comprehensive range of services for superannuation funds and institutional investors. David’s previous consulting work for Access Economics spanned a diverse range of economic and financial policy issues. Before co-founding Access Economics, he worked in key policy areas in the Federal Treasury, worked as an economic consultant and represented Australia at the International Monetary Fund. Jeb is a founding partner of Casey, Quirk & Associates. He has over 16 years of experience in the investment management industry. Jeb has broad experience advising asset management firms including leading projects in business strategy, investment process assessment, and distribution strategy. He also has experience advising firms in M&A strategy, due diligence, and post-merger integration. Jeb has led much of the firm’s work on investment quality and co-authored several industry research papers, including Success in Investment Management: Building and Managing the Complete Firm (2000), Style is dead. Jeb gained significant experience working with both equity and fixed income investment firms, leading business plan development and investment process assessment assignments.

Before joining BSCG in 1995, Jeb was a buy side Equity Research Analyst, covering metal companies, at State Street Research & Management Company in Boston, Massachusetts. He also spent five years as insurance Equity Analyst at Alex Brown & Sons, Inc. in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jeb graduated with a B.A. in Computer and English from Trinity College. He also received an M.B.A. in Finance from Cornell University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

A major aspect of his role now is as Managing Editor of Financial Standard. In both roles, he was involved in producing tailored investment solutions for a wide range of clients globally.

Prior to Michael’s move into funds management, he was a rated Capital Market investment strategist for NatWest Capital Markets and publisher of a number of authoritative research pieces.

Michael has also gained experience as a senior analyst within Market Operations at the Department of Treasury in Canberra.

Glenn has had over 25 years of experience in the superannuation and investment consulting
industry. He has had senior roles at Mercer, Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers),
Buck Consultants and Rice Walker Actuaries. He also was National Manager, Client Service with
ING Investment Management from 2000 to 2003.

Glenn is currently a Principal at GCL Consulting, a small firm of consultants providing
superannuation and investment consulting advice.

During Glenn’s career he has provided asset consulting advice to a wide range of clients
both in the public and private sector. He therefore has extensive experience in working
with clients in identifying their investment needs and developing investment solutions
that meet these needs. He also has been involved in the review and analysis of investment
managers in the Australian market for over 20 years.

During the three years that Glenn worked with ING Investment Management he was involved
in the analysis of ING’s investment processes and communicating these processes to clients.
He was also involved in developing and running a Socially Responsible investment vehicle.
During this period, Glenn was also involved in the expansion of the ING Investment Management
Implemented Investment products into the wholesale investment market.


Mr Harry Liem,

Harry Liem is a Senior Associate in the Sydney office of Mercer Investment Consulting. He provides advice on the full range of investment decisions, including asset allocation, portfolio construction and manager selection. He is a member of the Hedge Funds and Australian shares manager research teams.
Harry joined Mercer in 2004, and has over 13 years of experience in the investment management sectors of Australia, Singapore and the Netherlands where he worked as a portfolio manager for a number of reputable companies. Harry holds a Master’s degree in Computing Science from Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands). He holds an MBA from Stirling University (UK) and is a CFA® charterholder.
Harry is also a Senior Associate of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia and has lectured and conducted workshops on a variety of topics including Hedge Funds, Equity Analysis and Portfolio Management, and is a regular speaker at conferences.

Mr Peter Lunt,

Peter joined VicSuper in 2005 as Manager Sustainability Investments with responsibilities in governance and sustainability across the investment portfolio, with particular emphasis on alternative asset classes. Most recently, he accepted the role as executive manager investments.

In these roles, Peter seeks to integrate analysis of environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities into VicSuper Fund investments. This includes incorporation of ESG considerations in the selection of external investment managers.

Prior to joining VicSuper, Peter was senior analyst with the Sustainable Investment Research Institute (SIRIS). In this role, Peter held responsibility for researching sustainability aspects of certain sectors and companies with the ASX200, business development and consulting.

Prior to SIRIS, Peter worked as a professional forester with various plantation managers in Victoria and New South Wales, with a focus on resource modeling and sustainable forest management.

Peter holds a combined Bachelor of Science (Forestry) / Bachelor of Economics, a Masters of Environment and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investments. Peter is a keen cyclist, and is fond of red wine.



Ms. Frances Magill,

Frances has been Chief Executive Officer of one of South Australia’s largest private sector superannuation fund for over 14 years. Frances has led the organisation from its humble beginnings to providing superannuation services to over 150,000 people and businesses. Under Frances’ stewardship, the Fund is a leader in the provision of innovative services.

Additionally, Frances (as Managing Director) leads Statewide Financial Management Services as an innovative administration financial service provider that employs more than 100 individuals.

Prior to this, Frances held positions in:
• The Workers Compensation Appeals Tribunal, as a ministerial appointment.
• The Federated Clerks’ Union, as an Industrial Organiser.
• The SA Federated Council of College Academics, as Acting Secretary.
• Proprietor of a number of her own businesses.
• An elected Councillor for the City of Unley.

Frances has and in some instances still chairs a number of associations.

Frances is also a Director of FEAL (Fund Executive Association Limited), a Rotarian and was the first female President of the Rotary Club of Thebarton, a Fellow of the National Institute of Accountants, Justice of the Peace, a Member of the Institute of Company Directors, an Associate Member of the Company Secretaries Association, a Board Member of the Racing Industry Advisory Council of SA and Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Committee Member (South Australia).

Frances is also the holder of the title 2000 Telstra South Australian Business Woman of the Year and is also a fully qualified financial planner since completing her Diploma of Financial Planning in 2003.

Frances has been awarded the Centenary Medal for Services to the Community and Statewide Superannuation Trust.


Mr Tony McFadyen,

Tony McFadyen joined QIC in December 2002 following a short consulting arrangement for QIC which commenced in April 2002. Tony manages QIC’s client relationship management, service and sales functions. He is responsible for positioning QIC in the wholesale investment management markets and achieving QIC’s retention and growth targets.

Tony has had over 23 years experience in financial markets, with roles in wholesale investment management as well as trading in derivatives, advice to corporations on risk management, and the creation of a capital markets broking business. Since 1994 Tony has been involved in the wholesale investment management markets, managing sales and marketing teams, administration and performance measurement functions.


Mr Doug McTaggart,

Doug McTaggart is currently the Chief Executive Officer of QIC. QIC manages over $50 billion in assets for the Queensland Government and, increasingly, the private sector.

Dr McTaggart has held various positions as an academic economist. His last position was as Professor of Economics and Associate Dean at Bond University. Prior to joining QIC he was the Under Treasurer and Under Secretary of the Queensland Department of Treasury

He is currently a Councillor on the National Competition Council (NCC), and a Council Member of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

He is Immediate Past-Chairman of IFSA, has been President of the Economic Society, Australia and a member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board.

He holds an Honours Degree in Economics from the Australian National University, and a Masters Degree and PhD from the University of Chicago.



Mr Gerard Noonan,

Gerard Noonan has been chair of JUST Super, the industry fund for journalists and actors since 1991. As a journalist working in Melbourne, Sydney and Rome for almost 30 years, Noonan currently holds a senior editorial position with the Sydney Morning Herald. He was a former editor of the Australian Financial Review.

Mr David O'Sullivan,

David joined BUSS(Q) in January 2005and is responsible for the overall Fund management and in particular, the Fund’s investment strategy. David has spent his whole career in superannuation and now has 30 years industry experience.

Greg Smith, a senior actuary with 18 years experience in superannuation, life insurance and investment consulting, is the lead consultant in Hewitt's Retirement and Financial Management practice in Sydney.

Greg has advised a broad range of companies and the trustees of their benefit arrangements on all aspects of the financial management and governance of local and international employee benefit plans.

Mr David Sokulsky,

David joined Macquarie in 2004 in the role of fund analyst and works in a team responsible for constructing funds of hedge fund and allocating capital on behalf of Macquarie and their clients, to hedge fund managers around the world . David holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) and a Doctorate in Applied Finance. As part of his postgraduate studies, David worked with the quantitative team at J B Were and lectured on quantitative investments, analysis and derivatives throughout Australia and Asia. Following his academic career, he took up the position of head of research at InvestorInfo Limited, providing industry data to superannuation funds, fund managers and asset consultants. David also produced a quarterly hedge fund report, InfoHedge Quarterly, which became the most comprehensive report available to the Australian hedge fund industry.

Mr David St John,

David St. John is the Chief Investment Officer at UniSuper Management Pty Ltd. His role entails responsibility for the management and implementation of the Fund’s investment arrangements that comprise in excess of $21.0 billion of assets and 116 manager mandates and directly held investments, an open defined benefit plan that is 16% in surplus, and a
defined contribution plan that offers members seven investment options to choose from.

The internal investment team that David established and leads comprises 20 investment staff. His reports work in one of four functional areas; namely Private Markets, Public Markets, Research and Risk Management, and Investment Operations. In addition, there are 13 external service providers that provide a variety of ongoing specialist investment services to the internal investment team.

UniSuper Management Pty Ltd is the management company for UniSuper limited, which is the superannuation fund for Australia’s higher education sector and is one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds.

UniSuper is forecast to reach $150 billion of funds under management in 20 years’ time.

Michael was previously the Chief Investment Officer of both the Rio Tinto Staff Superannuation Fund and Comalco New Zealand Retirement Fund. Ms. Janet Torney,

Janet Torney is the Practice Leader and Principal of Aon’s Investment Consulting business in Australia. This practice comprises two teams - the Client Consulting team and the manager research business. As well as managing the overall business, Janet retains client responsibility and is closely involved in investment research. Janet is a member of Aon’s Global Investment Consulting Practice Council, the group that oversees Aon’s global investment standards, philosophy, processes and research. She also has an overviewing role with Aon’s investment consulting practice in New Zealand.

Janet has considerable leadership experience and has been a well-regarded industry spokesman over a number of years. Janet’s previous positions include Investment Director, Tactical Asset Allocation, with Westpac Investment Management, Director of Economics at SBC Warburg and Senior Economists at Macquarie Bank and Citibank. She is a Life Member of the Australian Business Economists.

Janet was educated in Queensland, attaining a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and university medal from the University of Queensland.


Tim Unger,

Tim is a Senior Investment Consultant with Watson Wyatt. He advises institutional clients on all aspects of their investment management arrangements, including strategic asset allocation, investment manager arrangements and manager selection. His specialist responsibilities include strategic asset class research, asset liability modelling and research into hedge funds. Tim is also a member of Watson Wyatt’s Thinking Ahead Group.

Roger Urwin,

Roger graduated from Oxford University and qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1983. He worked as an investment consultant for Bacon and Woodrow and headed William Mercer's investment practice before joining Gartmore Investment Management in 1987, responsible for business development and quantitative investment. He joined Watson Wyatt as a partner in 1989 to head up the firm's investment consulting practice.

Roger has wide experience of investment matters having been both on the investment management and consulting side. He has responsibility for a number of the firm's major investment clients both in the UK and internationally advising them on all investment issues. He is the author of a number of papers on asset allocation policy and manager selection. He is on the Board of INQUIRE (the institute for quantitative investment research) and the Editorial Board of MSCI.

Roger is the Global Head of Investment Consulting and has a worldwide team of over 330 in his charge.

Adam Walk is General Manager, Investment Services at QSuper. He provides advice to the QSuper Board of Trustees and Queensland Treasury on investment policy, structure and associated risks. These fiduciaries together govern the superannuation arrangements of Queensland Public Service employees, with assets currently in excess of $45 billion. He has degrees in finance and politics and a master’s degree in applied finance. He is a Fellow of Finsia and a CIMA® designee.
