Gain Competitive Advantage with DHL Supply Chain Inventory Ownership Solution

Releases cash locked in your supply chain

In a world where global production is becoming increasingly common, maintaining an efficient supply chain brings its own set of challenges.  Supply chains are not only growing more complex, they are also becoming more time consuming as more companies manufacture, source and sell their products internationally.  Rapid fluctuations in customer demand make just-in-time delivery paramount from the buyer’s point of view but difficult to control from seller’s end.  Cash flows are difficult to determine, turning integration of the physical and financial supply chain into a balancing act. This results in companies holding inventories for longer periods and inevitably, shouldering higher costs.

In recognition of the trend, DHL developed an industry-leading Supply Chain Inventory Ownership solution to optimize companies’ end-to-end supply chain from both a physical and financial point of view.

Partnering with GE Trade Distribution Services (TDS), DHL acts as a Lead Logistics Provider (LLP) for the end-to-end supply chain by combining physical logistics, call centres, financial services, supply chain consulting and IT solutions to deliver a solution in line with companies’ particular needs and preferences.

Benefits which customers can get from this new solution include:

  • Reduces cash to cash cycle.  As a result critical cash flow is freed up – for improvements, for growth or for re-structuring
  • Drive efficiencies through DHL and TDS integrated back end systems; data flows trigger financial flows.
  • Increases inventory turns and substantially lowers inventory carrying costs
  • Enables just-in-time inventory, reduces risk of delays and better fill rates and improved customer service
  • Saves time and money through operational efficiencies gained from the DHL/GE proven supply chain operational processes and systems

General Motors Honors APL Logistics

‘Supplier of the Year’ award highlights 20-year relationship

APL Logistics, a worldwide leader in delivering supply chain solutions, has received the Global Supplier of the Year award from General Motors for excellence in international logistics.

The award, presented in a ceremony at the General Motors Vehicle Engineering Center in Warren, Mich., highlights a 20-year relationship between the two companies centered on inbound logistics management and ocean freight transportation.

“We are pleased and proud to receive this honor from one of the world’s great companies,” said David Lim, Group President and CEO of NOL Group, the parent company of APL Logistics. “We have built our reputation on customer service, and recognition from General Motors is validation that we are living up to our reputation.”

A global team of GM executives from purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and logistics evaluate candidates for the prestigious awards. Winners are determined based on performance, quality, service, technology and price.

“Global reach and automotive-industry expertise are core strengths of ours,” said APL Logistics President Brian Lutt. “It’s gratifying to be recognized for these strengths by General Motors.”

APL Logistics manages parts flows for GM within the NAFTA region between suppliers in the greater Midwest and GM assembly plants in Mexico. Cost savings, increased revenue and real-time visibility with Cognizant's Box Management Tool

Asset intensive 3PLs are now faced with a severe capacity crunch owing to mismatch between demand and supply and this is forcing them to make the most of the assets they have and look for ways to improve. The need is to put in place processes and systems which can facilitate optimized trailer and container utilization by tracking the location and status of each of them.

We present below a case study of a project on the above, which we had executed for one of our strategic customers.

The Client:

As North America's largest private truckload carrier, client moves freight and creates innovative transportation solutions that are designed to solve their customers' transportation needs. The client has also been recognized for delivering leading edge technology solutions.

Existing Scenario:

The current asset management process was supported by the Trailer Inventory System (which existed as a primitive VB application) that

·         Could not scale to support increasing requirements

·         Required extensive manual intervention

·         Could not provide tracking information to users

·         Resulted in sub-optimal asset utilization and reduced service levels to customers

Cognizant’s Solution:

Cognizant designed and developed a Box Management Tool which enabled:

·         Tracking the location of the box at all times

·         Accurate box information to find available boxes for drivers/carriers to pick up in work assignment planning

·         Maintaining planned box commitment to a customer

·         Metrics for measuring commitment against the plan

·         Managing rail accessorial charges relating to boxes

The entire project was carried out in five iterations involving re-engineering, process changes and enhancements to the existing system like:

·         Setting out parameters to track a trailer by creating a data mart and provide analytics like box utilization, customer index value etc.,

·         Feature that allows trucks to communicate with applications via satellite

·         Processes to demarcate the existing locations using geo codes.

Client benefits:

·         Cost savings due to optimal asset utilization- better profitability

·         Better service levels- more revenue

·         Real-time visibility into asset location

Sterling Commerce aids Sony to quicken business processes and fasten response time

Real-time supply chain collaboration is a top priority for most manufacturers. But in industrial manufacturing — where the failure of a single part can cause a plant shut down — it’s an imperative. Competition is intense. And while price matters, what matters more is time to market, build to order, engineering excellence, and on-time delivery of quality products.

Sterling Commerce Supply Chain Management applications can be combined to form larger solutions or can be used as stand-alone solutions.

Sony Supply Chain Solution, Inc.’s business processes include procurement and forwarding, order taking, inventory control, job support and international logistics keeping pace with production innovation in a wide variety of manufacturing fields.

Sony procures more than 30,000 different parts from nearly 800 affiliated parts suppliers to support manufacturing at more than 50 plants worldwide. The company ships finished products to dealers, distributors and consumers in more than 200 countries and territories.

In order to stay competitive, Sony constantly pursues technical innovations in electronic logistics and supply chain management. One of the company’s leading technology and business process initiatives is an industry standard software solution developed internally for systematically rating air cargo and customs clearing companies. The company needed to improve the application by quickly integrating it with disparate systems.

“Our application is a good tool, but its data handling and modeling capabilities were not sufficient to cope with rapid changes in business and technology,” said Keiichi Yumita, General Manager, Systems Strategy, Sony Supply Chain Solution, Inc. “We needed a solution to integrate and better manage the EAI portion of the application.”

Management of the air cargo and customs clearing rating software was complicated by an underlying system that struggled to integrate several applications. The company selected GIS to handle its integration needs because of the solution’s ability to seamlessly link both internal and external partners quickly without having to scrap existing systems or protocols.

“The main problem was that our application could not quickly respond to the changes and expansion of the business flow,” Yumita said. “GIS is a solution that can link both internal applications (EAI) and external companies (B2B) in one package.” By providing a process-centric approach to automating business processes, GIS allows Sony to react quickly to changes in its day-to-day business.

Gentran Integration Suite (GIS), a modular solution built on the Sterling Commerce Multi-Enterprise Services Architecture (MESA), enables the intelligent and timely use of business information by uniting any-to-any integration-brokerage services, multi-gigabyte file support, and strong business process management capabilities including detailed analytics and content-based routing for decision-making support. It powers real-time processing with state-of-the-art technology while remaining compatible with Sony’s current systems and batch processing, according to Yumita. “The application improves visualization of information and provides an adaptive supply chain that allows us to quickly respond to market changes by automating business processes and logistics information.”

GIS also enables Sony to link various business processes within and among Sony Group companies and to develop process changes that give system operations the ability to quickly respond to client needs. “We really like GIS because it’s built to integrate EAI and B2B as one package,” Yumita said.

Easing logistics services with radio frequency technology

Client: A leading business service provider
Business:  Logistics & Warehousing
Location:  Thailand
The Challenge:  To meet rising expectations for warehouse efficiency and inventory management
The Solution: Implementation of radio frequency solution for real-time SAP update

By initiating cutting-edge technology to traditional warehouse operations, Electra has introduced immense productivity gains for a leading business services provider in Thailand.

The client is an established provider of business services including back office support, logistics, warehousing and distribution services. Electra has wirelessly enabled the client's entire warehouse with radio frequency (RF) equipment comprising just two access points and four mobile handheld scanning terminals.

With RF, warehouse staff can instantly know if the stocks are correctly received and placed in the right racks, according to the backend SAP system.

Information obtained from bar code scanning is integrated to the SAP system - in real time. This eliminates the need for manual input, which is traditionally the bottleneck of processes. Previously, stock movement has to be tracked manually and tediously on paper, which is only updated to the system at the end of the working day.

Also, urgent orders can be handled faster, and data integrity is not compromised as incorrect entries due to human error is minimised.

Numerous transactions have been automated at the RF terminal end, including:

» Scanning of outgoing serial numbers

» Capturing of handling charges

» Automatic email notification for stock release

» Verification of material/batch/storage type/storage bin

» Background creation/confirmation of transfer orders

» Viewing of bin stock status

Logistics officers, even from the comfort of a remote location, can now make stock decisions with more confidence and respond faster to day-to-day inventory issues.

An RF-enabled warehouse has not just enhanced productivity on the floor, but also in turn improved the client's logistics services to its own stable of customers who benefit from a more reliable delivery.

Benefits of RF for warehouse logistics:

» Estimated total time savings: 20%

» Real-time integration of stock data to SAP WM module

» Paperless productivity that eliminates manual data input

» Enhanced data integrity with less human error

» Remote management of inventory issues

» Better planning for stock removal by channeling daily picking list to RF devices

» More time to focus on other value-added warehouse services
