Mr Rick Beasley, Operations Manager, Meat and Livestock Australia
Rick Beasley is currently Operations Manager, National Livestock Identification Scheme. He has been working with Meat and Livestock Australia on this program for the last five years. During this time, the NLIS has been developed from a concept to a fully operational scheme with over 40 million devices recorded.
Rick grew up on a cattle property on the Western Darling Downs of Queensland and started work with the Qld Dept of Primary Industries in beef cattle research and extension in Central and North Qld.
He realised that the marketing of cattle was central to greater productivity and returns and moved to the Qld. Livestock and Meat Authority where the first systems of trading cattle on specifications were developed.
After 10 years in developing cattle marketing systems, he moved to a position of Livestock Operations Manager with a large export meatworks. This position was responsible for the purchasing of 1 000 cattle a day and matching the production to sales and marketing.
During his time in this position, he realised that product integrity was becoming a more important part of the supply chain. After leaving the meatworks position, he joined MLA to develop and implement the NLIS program.
The NLIS is now recognised as world’s best identification, traceability and product integrity system.
