He was, until recently, Senior Manager: Global Risk Management of the Mittal Steel Group (formerly the LNM Group). Before this appointment, Gert was the Manager: Corporate Risk and Insurance Management of the Iscor Group, a position he held since 1994 and as such, was responsible for the Group’s total risk and insurance requirements. After the unbundling of Kumba Resources Ltd. from Iscor, he maintained responsibility for Kumba’s total risk management and insurance function in a dual responsibility. He is still a director of Ferrosure (South Africa) Insurance Company Limited and served on the Boards of Ferrosure (Isle of Man) Insurance Company Limited, and of Ispat International Insurance Company Limited based in Guernsey. He holds management and risk management qualifications from a number of local and international universities, including an M.B.Sc. from ANCES, a PMD from UDW and a Ph.D. from UAS. He is the immediate past President of the Risk Management Federation of South Africa, a Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management of South Africa and a past Chairman of the South African Risk and Insurance Management Association (SARIMA), a member of RIMS (USA) and of the U.K. Institute of Directors based in London. He is a winner of the SANTAM/RMF Risk Manager of the Year Award for 2001. Gert is a member of the Risk Management Workgroup of the King Committee on Corporate Governance (King 2).
