Mr Luc Aliadière,

Luc Aliadière was born in 1948 and studied mechanical and electrical engineering at the Ecole Spéciale des Travaux Publics (ESTP) in Paris. He joined SNCF in 1973, holding positions of responsibility in the Rolling Stock and Diesel Locomotive Maintenance division of the South-Eastern network (1973-1979), then the Paris Ile-de-France Region (1980-1987). From 1986 to 1988 he worked at Sofrerail where he was Director for the United States and Australia, and project manager for the Channel tunnel. In 1989 he was seconded to the European Commission as a railway expert at the Directorate General for Transport and was involved in the preparation of the Trans-European network of high speed rail links.
Following a post as European Director for Systra from 1990 to 1993, he spent 1994 to 1998 as Director for Strategy and Development at the SNCF’s mainline passenger business, and then became Assistant Director for the SNCF Paris Region (Ile-de-France). Luc Aliadière was Director for Environment at SNCF from 2002 to 2002, before becoming Director for European Affairs from 2002 to 2005. In this capacity he was particularly involved in the definition of SNCF’s European strategy and relations with all the institutions of the European Union. On 28 June 2005 the General Assembly of the UIC ratified the decision of the Executive Board to appoint Luc Aliadière as UIC Chief Executive from July 2005.

Bruno started his career as a Consulting Engineer and during 4 years he worked for the biggest Industrials like Peugeot, Pechiney, Usinor, where he had to get industrial installations done at a high level of performance (Reliability, Quality) .
In 1992, he moved to the SNCF (French Railways). His first experience was as a Head Master of Valenciennes station.
He then became a responsible for the Operations Centre of Calais where he worked with Eurotunnel for Eurostar and International Railway freight.
He was then involved in the Management of the Quality Processes for Paris-Lille TGV (SNCF’s High Speed Services) as a Deputy Director for the North East Sector Passenger Main Lines.
He spent the last years as a Director for Paris Montparnasse Main Station where his role involved the management of the Ticket Sales Department (Annual Turnover of £100m) and the Customer Care (130 000 persons a day).
Then he joined Eurostar as an Operations Director where he has been successfully in charge of the Eurostar Missions.
He joined Keolis in 2001 as a Deputy Director of Keolis UK where he has been contributing to the development of Keolis activities, including the management of the TPE bid (awarded in August 2003) and of the IKF (offer submitted in July 2005).
He is now also the Head of the heavy rail development department within Keolis International Division.

Elio Catania has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Ferrovie dello Stato Group since 2004.
He has spent most of his carreer in IBM, which he joined in 1970. He has worked in 4 continents and, among other positions, has been Vice President - Marketing for IBM Europe, with head offices in Paris, and President & Chief Executive Officer of IBM Italy.

Gunther Ellwanger graduated in civil engineering from the University of Stuttgart and got a doctoral degree from the University of Darmstadt. He started working for the DB (German Railways) in 1970 in Stuttgart. In 1986 he became the Head of the Transport and Corporate Policy Department at the "Zentrale der DB" in Frankfurt.
From 1991 to December 1995 as well as from July 2000 until end of 2002 Mr Ellwanger has been working as the Director of the High Speed Division for the International Union of Railways (UIC), at the Headquarters in Paris. He chaired the project “Passenger Traffic Study 2010 – 2020”.
From January 1996 until June 2000 and from January 2003 until September 2004 he has been Director of the Economics, Finance and Environment Division of UIC. He chaired the UIC Working Groups Environment and External Effects.
In October 2004 Gunther Ellwanger went into semi-retirement. He continues some activities for UIC and he became a Member of the German organisation “Friends of Pro-Rail Alliance” (Allianz pro Schiene).

Peter Flinn is Managing Director of Vectra Group Limited, an international safety engineering consultancy of some 150 people working in the nuclear, rail and process industries. Prior to this, he was MD of ABB Eutech, also an international technical consultancy.
Previously, he was MD of ABB Support Ltd and first joined ABB in Derby in 1991 as Head of Engineering of what is now Bombardier UK. He was closely involved in the restructuring of the rail company after ABB took full control, setting up and running the Bodyshell Division of which he was Director, based in York. In his earlier career, he worked as UK Quality Director for Leyland DAF Limited, the commercial vehicle organisation, in Lancashire and Scotland.
Peter is a chartered engineer by profession. He is an active member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and has been chairman of its Manufacturing Industries Division. He was also on the CBI Manufacturing Council between 1999 and 2002

As Chief Technical Officer of Carmen's Rail and Logistics division, Dr Forbes has overall responsibility for the specification and design of Carmen’s major systems. He has more than fifteen years experience in developing information systems at Carmen. He has a broad range of technical skills in computing and advanced mathematics for applications.
Dr Forbes was project manager or team leader for the initial development of Carmen's core rail crew management and logistics systems and has managed the deployment of these products to major customers including SNCF, Amtrak, The Royal Mail and Australia Post. He was also been responsible for research and development work, particularly in the areas of supply chain logistics, rail crew scheduling and fleet scheduling.
Dr Forbes has a PhD in Operations Research from The University of Queensland.

Born in 1955, Philippe Gauderon has been Head of the Operating business unit of Swiss Federal Railways, Passenger Traffic division, since 2003. With over 6,200 employees, Operating is the Division's biggest business unit and responsible for preparing, running and maintaining passenger trains. The unit is also responsible for fleet procurement, servicing and withdrawal from service as well as for resource planning and management. Purchasing and logistics are also part of the unit's remit.

Murray Hughes is Editor of the professional trade periodical Railway Gazette International which covers technical and commercial railway developments worldwide, circulating to senior railway managers and engineers in more than 135 countries.

He is also Editor-in-Chief of the fortnightly newsletter devoted to Britain's privatised railway industry, Rail Business Intelligence, previously Rail Privatisation News.

Murray has overall responsibility for Railway Gazette International's associated publications: Metro Report and Railway Directory, and the journal’s website, www.railwaygazette.com.

Murray holds a BA Hons in Applied Language Studies, and after spending a year with Swiss Federal Railways, he worked briefly for the International Union of Railways in Paris. He was Foreign Editor of Modern Railways before joining Railway Gazette International, where he became Editor in 1991.

His book on world high speed railway development, Rail 300 - The World High Speed Train Race, was published in 1988, and has since appeared in Spanish, Swedish, Japanese and German.

In 1984 he became a member of the socialist party (SP). Seven years later he was elected to the Parliament. As a member of parliament he was reporter of the committee of inquiry into “The Gang of Nijvel” and reporter of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into “Dutroux-Nihoul and accomplices”.

Renaat LANDUYT became Minister of the Flemish Government for Employment and Tourism in 1999. Three years later he was assigned to Vice-Minister-President of this Flemish Government. Since the 21st of July 2004 Renaat LANDUYT is the Minister for Mobility of the Federal Government in Belgium.

Graham Marshall is the Security Specialist for Network Rail. As such he is responsible for leading the corporate management of arrangements for counter terrorism security, crisis management and incident management preparedness. As part of this role he has special responsibility for the overall security arrangements associated with the Royal Train, the carriage of nuclear fuels and other high consequence dangerous goods and the carriage of certain military loads. He is also part of the Network Rail incident response arrangements and operates in support of the overall strategic commander of terrorist and catastrophic incidents.
Prior to joining the railway industry some 4 years ago Graham spent 31 years in the police service in the City of London. He retired in the rank of Chief Superintendent with overall command of all uniform operations within the force. As such he had command of general uniform patrol policing, specialist firearms teams, other support functions such as traffic, dogs and horses, communications and counter terrorism teams.
During his police career Graham had operational command of numerous incident and events. These included the ground command for the IRA terrorist explosion in Bishopsgate, City of London; overall command of three other smaller IRA explosions; command of various state occasions at the City Guildhall and St Paul’s Cathedral; command of military parades, Lord Mayor’s Show event and the Millennium Eve celebrations.
