NEC Business Solutions Ltd is very pleased to be sponsoring Government Technology World as the Event Partner of the conference and exhibition.  This flows very naturally from our strategic objective of being a leader in the Information and Communications Technology sector.  So we are delighted to be involved with an event focussed on the increasingly important role that technology is playing in public administration.

We have, for example continued to invest in research and development work in Australia.  While other hi-tech companies have decided to move off-shore, NEC continues to invest in local know-how.  Our Technology Centre in Mulgrave is not only the hub of NEC research and development program in Australia, but is also a strong player in the technology innovation work of NEC globally.

To highlight our commitment in just how much we believe in Australia as the place to be for R&D, last year NEC spent more than $60 million on R&D.

Research and development in core areas as broadband access products and 3G telephony continue to be led by NEC Australia for the global market and while NEC Australia is the R&D arm of the business, NECBS provides the integrated solutions for enterprises and businesses encompassing all of NEC's products and services.

The synergy we hold between research, design, manufacture, and the tailoring of specific solutions to individual client's needs gives clear benefits to our clients.  This keeps us ahead of the pack.  This is why we will continue to invest so heavily in R&D.

As Managing Director of NEC Business Solutions Ltd I am keen to ensure we continue to lead the industry in data and voice convergence. 

As we take the next step into converged technologies as the basis of our corporate growth, I am committed to continual improvement in our strategies and structures to stay at the forefront of best practice.  This is something with which all participants at Government Technology World will be well familiar.

Winning a contract from the Victorian Government worth $20 million over three years to supply the Victorian Office Telephony System indicates how thoroughly we understand the public sector. It highlights our strength and diversity as a company, and it's a strength that separates us from our competitors.

As we move to stay ahead of the pack, our desire to remain the pacesetter in technology development and trends requires some very creative thinking on our behalf. Within two years, NEC will introduce into Australia a ubiquitous environment -- where a solitary device like a PDA or mobile telephone replaces all other business tools including the personal computer and telephone.

With one mobile communications device, employees will be able to move from an office, operating on a wireless LAN (local area network) to outside, immediately and seamlessly switching to a 3G network.  We look forward to sharing more about this innovation at Government Technology World.
