Tuesday 16 August 2005 Separately Bookable Pre-conference Workshop
Understanding the building blocks of RFID
This one-day workshop is designed for anyone considering or currently involved with an RFID implementation. The sessions will help you to answer your questions about RFID and how it will impact upon your supply chain and other businesses processes. Attendees will leave the Workshop with an understanding of how RFID will impact business strategy and how to ensure a successful strategic implementation.
Session 1 Led by Gerry Wind, Senior Sales Consultant, Sunshine Technologies
Investing in RFID This session is designed to give investors a deeper understanding of the bourgeoning RFID market, including the short and medium terms in the industry; which areas of the market will be dominated by incumbents; and which areas still present opportunities for start-ups.
Start-up landscape and strategies This session will look at the most successful start-ups today, why they have succeeded thus far and what their market position and potential is going forward. Successful RFID startups have attacked the market horizontally. Big, established players come into the market and Gen 2 technologies begin to dominate, will start-ups be relegated to niches? Should young RFID companies search for opportunities in vertical markets?
Session 2
Led by Bruce Grant, EPC/RFID Project Manager, Gillette Australia
RFID business benefits Why is RFID suddenly the hot technology?
- Market forces that are driving RFID
- Why certain business sectors are leading the way?
- Potential business benefits in key operational areas
- Provide an overview of the benefits that the technology is likely to bring to whole range of industries
- Update delegates with the latest plans and deployments from leading companies around the world
New RFID-driven business models RFID will create new opportunities for both start-ups and established businesses. This session explores the types of businesses that are likely to emerge and the sectors where they will flourish.
Session 3
Led by Alfio Grasso, Deputy Director, AutoID Lab, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Adelaide,
and Professor Peter Cole, Research Director and Professor, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Adelaide
Standardisation in RFID Legislation regarding the use of RFID varies around the world, and also is subject of ongoing review. The standards, which ensure compliance with legislation and also guarantee interoperability between RFID systems manufactured by different technology providers, also are the subject of ongoing development. This session will give an update on the latest developments on standardisation.
The Physics behind RFID This session is designed to give attendees a fundamental understanding of RFID hardware. It will cover the different frequency bands used: LF (125KHz); HF (13.56 MHz); and UHF (860 to 960 MHz and 2.45 GHZ). It will explain the nature of RF fields and radio propagation, including the null spots, reflections, polarisation and other issues. A lot of the buzzwords within the RFID community will be explained from the ground up, arming delegates with the terminology they need to understand the technology and to work with systems integrators and other RFID vendors.
Session 4
Led by Dr John Mo, Team Leader, Manufacturing Systems, CSIRO Manufacturing and Infrastructure Technology
RFID in the real world This session will highlight many of the real world issues that arise when deploying RFID. The effects of antenna polarisation, metal and liquid products will be examined, as will various approaches to alleviating the problems which arise.
RFID in 2010 What will be the most promising new RFID product areas over the next five years? When will the market for RFID software products, middleware and other areas be ready to take off? This session looks to provide guidance for investors based on current RFID adoption patterns and the evaluation of the technology.
The workshop has a strong commercial and technology focus. Attendees will leave the course with an understanding of the operation of the RFID system, and how to get started with the job of implementation. Whether you have heard the term RFID and want to know what it all means, or whether you are already familiar with certain aspects of it and want to round out your knowledge, the RFID workshop will satisfy your desire to reach beyond the hype into the substance of RFID. |
Course times and documentation
Registration starts at 8:30am. The course will commence at 9:00am and finish at 4:00pm with appropriate breaks for refreshments and lunch. Participants will receive comprehensive documentation including all presentation material.
